Our Intermediate Longsword class today was about the mechanics of thrusting. As one fencer called out, it is historically a more deadly action than a cut at your opponent. While we are not trying to kill anyone today, a well-placed thrust can also keep you safe and protected from your opponent's blade by controlling their range of motion. Let's get to sparring and work on some thrusts! ⚔️

Our DHFA fencers had a great showing at AGO, and we want to brag about their achievements!

Head Instructor Trevor Jones swept his pools in Tier A and went into the elims as the #1 seed and took fourth. Brady Klein and instructor Chad Mathine made it into the upper elimination bracket. He finished 12th (top 1/4) and Chad finished 25th (top 1/2) when they both came in ranked in the bottom 10.

Katie Day finished top 4 in Tier B URG and top 8 in Tier C. Rianne Lyons started in the upper bracket in open longsword and made top 1/2 before needing to withdraw with an injury 😢!

Katie’s URG relay team finished 4th. Trevor, Brady, and Chad had some excellent bouts, and Chad almost solo’d their first opponent (came up one point short).

Great fencing, team!!! ⚔️

Last week was DHFA's annual SWORD CAMP! We increased our usual mile-high elevation to over 9,000 feet near Blackhawk, Colorado, to spar with a beautiful mountain backdrop! We sparred with mixed weapons, ate delicious food, and played Capture the Flag in a very hilly aspen grove!

A proper thrust can land on your opponent while also controlling their blade - thereby keeping you safe! In one move, you've successfully followed the three most important fencing rules:
1. Don't get hit
2. Don't f*cking get hit
3. Hit them!

Parry... then riposte! A good parry-riposte is bread and butter for fencers, which is why we always execute it perfectly! 🤭

Last weekend, DHFA sent a group of fencers (a flock of feders? A storm of swords?) to Philadelphia to compete in the annual Revolution Rumble. Congratulations to for taking 2nd in Longsword Tier C and to , Brady Klein, and Trevor Jones for taking 3rd in Longsword Team Relay!

Shenanigans!

There's a lesson in here, even though it looks (and is) a whole bunch of fun. How do you spar with unbalanced weapons? What advantage does a rondel have when going up against a pike (with a chicken)? How can you exploit the trickiness of two longswords against a messer and buckler?
