Randy Travis turns 67 today and country music would not sound the way it does without him.
In 1986, he released Storms of Life and it sold three million copies. At a time when Nashville was chasing pop crossover hits, Randy Travis walked in with a deep baritone voice and reminded the entire industry what country music was supposed to sound like. He did not follow the trend. He buried it.
Seven Grammy Awards. Twenty two number one hits. Over 50 charted singles. Country Music Hall of Fame class of 2016. Songs like "Forever and Ever, Amen," "Diggin' Up Bones," and "Three Wooden Crosses" that your grandparents, your parents, and your children all know by heart.
In 2013, a massive stroke nearly took his life. Doctors gave him a 1 to 2 percent chance of surviving. He survived. Three years later he stood on the Country Music Hall of Fame stage and sang "Amazing Grace" through tears when they said he would never speak again.
Happy birthday, Randy. The voice may have changed but the legend never will.
