Fridays have become my own personal Pilates day.
Pilates is the perfect active recovery activity that decompresses my spine and connects me to my breath and body in a downtempo, restorative way.
Yoga is largely about relaxation to achieve deeper stretches. I know this is a gross generalization. It absolutely has its place and I believe that more now than I ever have before.
But Pilates complements weight training in particular so well because of the emphasis on stability of the spine, pelvis, and shoulders. Even Pilates breathing (aka intercostal breathing) teaches you how to breathe diaphragma without relaxing the abdominal wall. This is critical for proper bracing under load. This is one of the biggest issues hands-down that I see in peoples heavy lifts.
I would go as far as to say most people's grouchy hips and shoulders are directly related to this fundamental misunderstanding of breathing and bracing.
Pilates helps you learn how to tap into the structural "quieter" muscle groups in your body (esp core and shoulders) that can take your lifting-- or any other sport-- to the next level.
Better motor control = more stability = more freedom of movement.
