Growing Stronger!

Another big congratulations to some of our young BJJ athletes! Krishal earned his Gray & White Belt, while Luke, Blake, Leonardo, Hunter, and Jameson earned their Gray Belts! 👏🥳

This group is a perfect example of what we love about our kids’ program. They push each other, challenge each other, laugh together, and truly enjoy being part of a team. They’re not just learning how to be disciplined, they’re learning how to be good teammates. And their curiosity doesn’t stop on the mats; they’ve even developed a real appreciation for learning about the history, traditions, lineage and instructors who helped shape Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and our academy.

At LEMA, we want our kids to leave every class a little better than when they walked in. To give them life skills. Watching these young students grow together is pretty special.
Congratulations, kids. Thank you to your families. Keep learning, working well together and most importantly keep having fun!

Yesterday, our long time friend Paul Moon reached a milestone that takes many years of dedication and patience to achieve. After a long, committed history, Paul was promoted to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Paul is not only a WNY native but from Depew, the very same town we operate in. It’s especially meaningful that he reached this milestone while living and training thousands of miles away in Beijing, China. Distance, career changes, and family duties all haven’t gotten in the way of the jiu jitsu journey.

There’s an even more personal story behind this promotion. Paul and Prof. Michael have been friends since fourth grade long before Jiu Jitsu in Buffalo, academies, belts, or any of this were part of the picture. Even though they live on opposite sides of the world, whenever Paul comes home to visit family here in WNY, the two, along with Dave Szprygada somehow find their way back onto the mats together. Thousands of miles apart, but still training together in the chances they get. That kind of friendship and that kind of dedication to Jiu Jitsu is pretty extraordinary.

Congratulations, Paul. Black belt earned, sacrifices made, all with family and friendships in tact…and the journey continues!

🥈 NEW YORK SUMMER OPEN

Congratulations to Jason on taking home silver at the IBJJF New York Summer Open this past weekend! But the (adult blue belt) medal only tells part of the story. Early in the day, Jason found himself in a hole and battled all the way back for a huge come-from-behind victory an excellent example of the heart, composure, and team strength that shows up when things don’t go according to plan.

Showing heart is exactly what we strive for! Proud of you, Jason! Another big day for Lake Effect Martial Arts. 🥈💪

New Kickboxing Classes Are Here 🥊

Our striking program continues to grow and we’re excited to expand our schedule with TWO new kickboxing classes!

To help meet the growing demand, we’re proud to add active fighter and teammate Dylan Cookfair Dylan to our coaching roster. Dylan is a certified personal trainer, active competitor, and experienced coach in other competitive sports, and we’re confident his knowledge, energy, and experience will strengthen your training and help you pursue your goals.

This brand new class is ideal for beginners and intermediate students looking to build their striking skills, sharpen their fundamentals, and become more well rounded athletes.

A great opportunity for our current students to learn more about striking and an awesome introduction for newcomers who want to learn how to kick, punch, move, and push themselves!

Congratulations to our own Dylan Cookfair on an incredible performance Saturday night, capturing the 185 lb title under the Warrior Fight Series banner in North Tonawanda.

Dylan stepped into a tough environment, battling high humidity, a seasoned opponent, and a fast pace from the opening bell. Add in the challenge of fighting outdoors in a ring instead of a cage, under unfamiliar conditions, and once again Dylan showed exactly who he is by rising to the occasion.

A huge credit goes to Coach Earius and Coach Adam for putting together an outstanding training camp that had Dylan more than ready when the moment came. Preparation made the difference.

Thank you to everyone from our community who came out to support, and to Dylan’s friends and family for bringing incredible energy to the Tonawanda Canal. The support was felt all night long.

Dylan now moves to 3-0, capturing amateur gold and adding championship hardware at just 19 years old.

At Lake Effect Martial Arts, we believe quality over quantity, and Dylan’s dedication, our coaches’ preparation, and the support around him continue proving why that mindset works.

Thank you to the International Sport Kickboxing Association for running a smooth and professional event.

Awesome work Dylan and the Lema Fight Team. The journey continues.
