Ain’t Nothin’ But a D Thing (the bootleg mix tapes)

Pro athletes have HUGE egos. From 1 to 90 they ALL want to prove they are winners worthy of individual recognition. Trust me. EVERY Coach AND player in camp is taking this Drew Brees post-retirement thing personally.

Over the past two season, Brees’ in-season absences have been excellent dress rehearsals for the inevitable. They may miss the presence of number 9, but they KNOW the show MUST go on. Expect the unexpected.

“Make of this what you will, but Ken Crawley hasn’t given up a reception in one-on-ones this camp.”
-Nick Underhill

Ken Crawley picked off Jameis Winston during team drills. Paulson Adebo picked off Book during one-on-ones. As the loss of Janoris Jenkins leaves a vacancy, we are auditioning every cornerback walking the streets. Marshon Lattimore could face a suspension which makes September an adventure. Adonis Alexander is 6’3. Prince Nakamara runs a 4.45. KeiVarae Russell? Who? Imagine one of them changing his stars under DB coach Kris Richard.

Carl Granderson is playing at a hefty 270. Jalen Dalton had another sack.
Payton Turner is creating problems up front. Line him up inside and let him wreck the rhythm of opposing guards. Cameron Jordan will be on a pitch count which is smart, considering a 17 game marathon. Imagine the revised defensive line holding it down. David Onyemata returns in week 7.

According to Sean Payton, Kwon Alexander is being brought back with caution. Take all the time you need, Kwon. We already know what you can do alongside a happy Demario Davis. “56 and 58 together, now you KNOW you in trouble...” Give Pete Turner and Zach Baun the early playing time. Stash Kwon on the sidelines until Halloween.

The heart and soul players at safety, Malcolm Jenkins, Marcus Willams and Ceedy Deuce don’t play that. Receivers KNOW they better have their heads on a swivel because 27 and 43 will hit anything that moves and 22 is just plain crazy. For all his vile verbosity, Gardner-Johnson sets the standard for the group with his versatility and viciousness - and that, friends, is a great thing. Pro football is a dirty business.

The new components may not find a collective voice in the first three games. We ALWAYS start slow. In the best case, they sprint out of blocks and never look back. That is asking too much. In the hunt for Black and Gold October, the New Orleans Saints will be run-heavy and feature clock control on offense - and a defense that excels on third down.

Defense is the new offense. Book it.
