As a new season approaches, I always get excited. I’m already seeing so much growth in so many of our dancers this summer, and the hard work is starting to show! ❤️
For our competition girls, especially our new ones, they’re quickly learning that Coach Val pushes a little harder. Some kids need that push, while others are naturally motivated. As a parent myself, I know no one knows your child better than you do. As their coach, I feel like it’s my job to learn each child individually and figure out what helps them grow.

This week we talked about goals—not only as dancers, but as friends, teammates, leaders, and people. We openly talked about strengths AND weaknesses, because it’s okay to have both. I want them to recognize what they’re good at and build from there. Maybe their strength is kindness. Maybe it’s being a great teammate. Maybe it’s working hard at home, encouraging someone else, being coachable, or simply showing up ready to work.

And parents, never underestimate your role in their success. ❤️

Over the years, I’ve found that some of the most successful kids are the ones whose parents truly support what they’re doing. We have them all. Working parents, single parents, stay at home parents. Schedules are busy, I know, but they learn from you. Not by making excuses for them, but by teaching them to follow through.

On the tired days, remind them: “You made a commitment.”

Encourage them to practice. Don’t allow every excuse to become a way out. Instead, help them find a way through it. Nothing I love more than hearing from former students: "Thank you; you taught me early how to push through!"

Those lessons go WAY beyond dance.

And as our recreational season kicks off, one of my absolute favorite things is seeing those little faces light up with excitement when they walk into the gym. Or reminding them how many kids look up to them. For so many kids, the gym truly becomes their happy place. You’d be surprised how many parents tell me, “If I let her, she would be there every single day!” And honestly, I love that. ❤️

I’m also SO excited about our Christmas recital this year, and I hope these kids love it as much as I think they will! 🎄💎

I remind our dancers often just how lucky they are to have parents, families, and coaches who want them here and support something they love. I tell them, “Do you know how many kids would love to have this opportunity? Don’t ever take it for granted.”

So here’s to raising confident, resilient, hardworking dancers who learn to keep going when they’re tired, be kind when no one is watching, support their teammates, accept their weaknesses, and be proud of their strengths.

Yes, I want them to become great dancers.

But more importantly, I want them to become amazing, resilient people. ❤️💎
