She wasn’t the strongest. She didn’t have to be. According to the traditional story, Yim Wing Chun was taught to fight by a Buddhist nun named Ng Mui. Rather than relying on size or brute strength, she learned to use timing, positioning, structure, and technique against a stronger opponent.

That idea became the foundation of what we now know as Wing Chun.

You don’t have to be big, young, strong, or experienced to start learning practical close-range self-defense.

The Oblique kick also commonly known as Jaam Kuen" or "Jaam Gerk" (chopping/stamping leg) aimed at an opponent's knee or thigh. It uses downward body weight to disrupt balance, collapse a stance, or deaden the lead leg is a very effective technique in Wing Chun. In the ring its a legit kick but has been very controversial by fighters as it has cause serious career injuries. The force of the kick causes hyperextension to the knee that can destroy joint integrity. Fighters have not be the same after. In self defense its very effective when someone is trying to do you harm. If you like to learn more about Wing Chun close range self defense follow us!

You’ll get a disciplined, technical look at what to do when hands are already on you and there’s no time to “figure it out.” If you want practical Wing Chun-style competence built on principles you can train, this is the resource worth your attention.

Hubud Lubud and B**g Lop drills are both close-quarters tactile sensitivity drills.
What's the difference?

Ruotolo Brothers doing Hubud Lubud is a core close-quarters touch-sensitivity and flow drill from Filipino Martial Arts (Kali/Eskrima/Silat). Translating roughly to "to tie and untie," it cycles continuous defensive checks, traps, and counter-strikes between partners to build reflex speed, tactile awareness, and structural control in a tight space.

Below: "B**g Lop Sao" refers to a fundamental Wing Chun training drill that combines two specific hand techniques—B**g Sao (Wing Arm/Deflection) and Lop Sao (grabbing hand/pulling hand)—to teach practitioners how to redirect an opponent's energy and immediately counterattack. The drill focus on control and redirect an opponent's arm. It involves grabbing the opponent's limb spontaneously to break their balance and create openings for simultaneous counterattacks. This drill builds sensitivity, timing, and structure under pressure.

Key Differences:

• Rhythm vs. Disruption: Hubud-lubud is an endless flow drill meant to build seamless transitions and adaptability. Lop-sao is a disruptive action meant to forcefully break posture and end an exchange quickly.

• Energy Management: Hubud maintains a steady, circular connection ("sticky hands"). Lop-sao borrows or redirects an opponent’s incoming linear pressure by suddenly yielding and pulling.

• Application: Hubud serves as a modular platform for multi-style trapping, limb destructions, and counter-offense. Lop-sao acts as a direct gate-opener for a straight blast or punch down the centerline.

Close-range defense is where most people panic—until they learn real arm control. In Wing Chun, you don’t rely on strength or distance games; you use structure, sticky contact, and efficient footwork to manage what your opponent’s arms do the moment they touch. If you’ve been curious about Wing Chun or you want sharper tools for grappling-range situations, this breakdown shows how disciplined mechanics translate into confidence under pressure. Wing Chun kicks are designed for real self-defense—fast, direct, and efficient. Wing Chun focuses on low-line attacks to the knees, shins, and groin to disrupt an opponent's base while keeping both feet grounded and your hands ready to defend. By attacking the legs and lower body, they can break an opponent's balance, limit their movement, preventing from coming forward and create openings for follow-up strikes. Because the kicks stay low and direct, you remain stable, protected, and ready to keep fighting.
