While the league consensus puts the Spartans as finishing third and other predictors suggest we finish at the top, most people don’t know the players behind the team besides the common standouts. Football is a team-sport, all of us affect the game if we win or lose.

Now, with great pleasure, I present to you our South Mountain Spartans for the 2022 Spring Season…

#1 CJ GLOVER (WR/FS): Not only does he wear the jersey with the same number, he just might be the number one best overall player on the team.

#2 JACKSON BARBER (WR/FS): Well, if he isn’t number one, then being second fits him well rightfully so. But, maybe he’s vying for more.

#3 ANDY JONES (QB): You might know him as the “Surgeon”, however we know him as the “Real Estate Agent”. Our MVP is a normal dude, just like you and me, except he’ll make you pay.

#4 PETER JOHNSEN (FLEX): What kind of season will we see from him; the two-way stud from long before or the average jack-of-all-trades player?

#5 JESSE RADIKE (WR/FS): If you haven’t seen him play, you’re in for a treat. This guy has got talent. We almost lost him to some recruiting scouts.

#6 COLBY MCCLELLAN (DL): He may look like a pickup truck, and he sure hits like one too.

#7 LOGAN LARSEN (WR): Wow! The kid is special. Instead of veterans making key offensive plays to secure victories, this young star rose to many occasions.

#8 JORDAN SMITH (WR/CB): What to say about him? Hmm…just let the numbers speak for themselves.

#9 DAVIS ABBOTT (DL): You’ll either laugh when he makes the tackle or because of something he says.

#10 JEREMIAH JOHNSON (OL/DL): Perhaps you can call him Mr. Reliable. He’s always there, in or out (usually in the scrum of all the action).

#11 JAMES GLOVER (WR/CB): A former champion. A future champion.

#13 ALEX TOLMAN (TE/DL): Here’s a new name and face, and he’s quite the looker too…looks and playmaking ability.

#18 HENRY PAEA (LB): He was scary to go up against him before and he’s still scary. At least until you get to know him, after the game when you’re no longer opponents.

#23 TOMASI LEOTA (OL/DL): He’s on our team and we’re even terrified of him. He is nice, mostly. Just kidding, or am I?

#24 DEAN LEMMON (WR/CB): This old-timer is legendary in our books, as well as in the UTFL shrine. It’s easy to hate or love him.

#27 MATT KEYSAW (CB): The quiet defensive killer. That is all.

#32 BRYSON LARSEN (LB): His first season was a good showing. Potential is coming. Now!

#36 BLAIR ZERR (RB): Let’s see how our ROY shines in his sophomore season.

#40 MITCHELL LARSEN (RB/LB): With a little bit more refinement, you’ll see this guy become a recurring all-star. Oh, wait…he already is.

#41 JOE FLAKE (LB): I swear, he’s in almost every single tackle anywhere on the field. Somehow he knows where the ball is going all of the time.

#43 GAVIN EVANS (RB/LB): Everybody has a crush on him. Even rival players are jealous and that’s the reason why they’re trying to bring him down. Like that will ever happen.

#44 ALBERT REYES (OL/DL): We have heard his name before and now we’re hearing it in our favor. This is an exciting addition!

#47 MILTON GILES (FLEX): Don’t let his first name fool you, ‘Masi’ is cooler and better than all of us combined.

#48 AUSTIN BAILEY (K): He probably will get plenty of kicks each game with all the touchdowns on their way. He’s just hoping for a chance to score, and that’s possible if the league implements uprights soon.

#50 AIONE PAEA (OL/DL): Whatever you do, don’t make him angry.

#56 SIO CHICKO OLOAPU (OL/DL): Not only did we want more substitute rotations on the line, we actually got a starter in this big fella. Welcome to winning!

#78 AARON WILKERSON (OL/DL): Who doesn’t love this guy? He’s our loyal Sparty.

#92 NIX FA’ASAVALU (OL/DL): More gray hair means more experience. Also, he’s the nicest man you’ll ever meet.

#99 TREVOR MOSLEY (FLEX): When you see him, you know something great is on its way. When you don’t see him, you will wish he was there. He makes a huge difference. Fortunately we have tons of very capable “Next guy up” type players.

#0 JOSH TAOTOTO (WR/CB): He is undefeated against the Spartans and now will be undefeated with the Spartans. A great, new asset and weapon for our team!

Our championship run starts this Saturday!

With the season starting in less than a month, it is once again time to start the unnecessary drama - Preseason Power Rankings! We asked all the team managers and a few special guest judges to rank the teams in the order they believe they will finish the ‘22 Spring season. Each manager’s own personal team was omitted from the vote to reduce some bias in the voting. Points were assigned, feelings I’m sure were hurt, and fun was had by all.

Remember - this is purely for entertainment sake. Most voters have no idea on any new additions to each team and are usually just voting based on past accomplishments or on what they’ve heard from the rumor mill. Settle down and don’t be offended. Use it as bulletin board material and motivation to get better if you need that sort of thing. 🙂

So without further ado, the 2022 Spring Preseason Power Rankings!

1. Orem Ducks
No surprise who tops the list here. The ancestor of the mighty Fallouts, the Ducks took the title in their first season after rebranding and have made it to the championship game in each of the following seasons. The only thing hurting the Ducks’ stock is that voters seem to be questioning perennial MVP-candidate Dan Ottesen’s availability for championship games, having missed the last three title games. But with ‘The Chosen One’ on the field and the many weapons he has at his disposal (Nyondweh, Orwin, Thornton, etc.) and behind a line with two Titan winners in Long and Perri, the Ducks are always going to be the favorites.

2. Salt Lake Space Force
After a season off, the Space Force return looking to match their magical championship season. Going undefeated and finally claiming the gold in the spring of ‘21, the Space Force now seek to repeat history. But a season off usually means some changes in the roster and that leaves voters wondering how they’ll look this season. But with one of the fastest defenses in league history behind the likes of Jensen, Shipley, Fairman, and Rainer, the Force will surely be a championship contender whenever they take the field.

3. South Mountain Spartans
The longest tenured team in the league has had some ups and downs over the years, but they currently find themselves on the right side of that spectrum at the moment. The last two seasons have found the Spartans a mere one or two plays away from making the championship game. With an MVP QB in Andy “The Surgeon” Jones, one of the most athletic WR crews in the league, and the new addition of Rising Star RB Zerr, the Spartans’ ball-control offense has clearly found their groove and the Spartans look poised to turn that corner.

4. Golden Age Legends
Our sole new team this season has already seemed to have garnered some hype. Formally “retired” RB Jesse Balls seems to have assembled some of his fellow over-the-hill buddies and looks to take the field once more. Some have picked the Legends to take it all, while some have predicted them to finish dead last. So many questions about this team abound: Will the retirement home let them all out to play? How many broken hips can we expect? Are medic-alert bracelets allowed on the field? With a team name as audacious as “Legends”, can they possibly live up to the moniker? Only time will tell.

5. Utah Outcast
It feels like the Outcast are in the same boat every season - a roster full of talented pieces, but for some reason or another, they just can’t bring it together to make a championship run. Continuously showing flashes of absolute brilliance, the Outcasts’ issues seem to be more about consistency and discipline than any lack of skill. Can McKinley put the puzzle together and create the masterpiece that has been slowly building? We’ll keep saying it till it becomes true because eventually it will: this could be the Outcasts’ season to make a splash in the title picture.

6. Wasatch Wolves
The Wolves have always been an enigma. Over the years, they have consistently played some great games against the toughest opponents, nearly pulling off upsets against the likes of the Ducks, Panthers, Space Force, and Spartans. But on the flip side, they still have yet to post a single winning season. The rumor mill hints at some big-time acquisitions in the offseason that might pair up nicely with some of the Wolves’ young talent including Ironman winner Shane Retzlaff, so this could definitely be the season for them to turn some heads and complete those upsets.

7. Sports Rally
Sports Rally looks to make a statement in their “Final Stance”. This kinda feels like their second or third “Final Stance”, but man, we sure do appreciate their love for this game. No one who truly loves it can ever stay away for too long. Sports Rally is another team that may have never had a winning season, but they are consistently giving it their all and having fun along the way. And that is all rec football is really about. But offseason rumors suggest that the Bruins may have a whole host of new talent this season (like way too many - roster cap is 30 Bruins) and may just surprise a few people.

8. Utah Valley VooDoos
At one point not too long ago, it looked like the VooDoo could be the future of the league. They were looking really good when they came into the league just a few seasons ago, and had the makings of a team that could take over and be competing for championships in no time, but their progress has been slower than expected. But all it takes is one solid season to turn the tides again and this could easily be that season. With the do-it-all Aaron Palmer as the foundation, the VooDoo just need to fill in a couple more pieces around him and they’ll be on the fast track once more.

9. Utah Reapers
The Reapers are the definition of perseverance and sportsmanship and playing this game for the right reason. At the end of the day, this is rec football and isn’t going to pay any bills so you need to be having fun and playing because you love it, which is exactly what the Reapers have always done. And that heart and passion has in the past earned them a few solid seasons where they shocked the league. Can they do it again? And how many Wallers are there?! Is it time to change the team name to the Utah Wallers? :)
