What can happen when an athlete decides they want to get better?
Maria D’Orazio started training at FPC in June 2023, just after finishing her freshman track season.
She had seen some of the older athletes on her team training at FPC, and she came in for a pretty simple reason:
She wanted to get better.
At the end of her freshman season, Maria’s best marks were:
100M — 13.47
200M — 30.17
Long Jump — 15'3"
Since then:
100M — 12.99
200M — 26.27
Long Jump — 18'0.5"
That’s nearly half a second faster in the 100, almost 4 seconds faster in the 200, and nearly 3 feet farther in the long jump.
I’ve had the opportunity to coach Maria both as her sprint and jump coach at Bishop Watterson and through her training at FPC.
What I like about her story isn’t just where she is now.
It’s how far she’s come.
In the long jump, Maria became a regional finalist, and her 18'0.5" jump is the #2 performance in Bishop Watterson school history.
On the track, she also helped Watterson finish 4th in the 4x100 and 2nd in the 4x200 at the 2026 Ohio Division II State Championships.
And now she’s taking the next step in her journey, competing in track & field at John Carroll University as a freshman.
Maria didn’t start training because she was already one of the best.
She started because she wanted to become better.
Then she put in the work.
That’s what athlete development is supposed to look like.
Start where you are. Put in the work. Keep getting better.
We’re proud to call Maria an , and we’re excited to see what comes next for her at John Carroll.
