The END of an era and the BEGINNING of a new one......1966 to 2026.
As many of you know, the owners of Butchie's (Butchie & Diana Terwiske) are 80 & 79 years old. It has been time for them to retire for many years, but the right situation has never presented itself until now. It is with great excitement that we announce that time has come! As we close the chapter on 60 years of this business owned by the Terwiske family, it is now time to hand the saddle and lead over to a new family who is excited to breathe in new life.
Over the next few weeks, Butchie will be appointing Brittany Massey as manager. You will see Brittany at our place, learning the ropes. She will be working alongside both Butchie and Diana over the next 30-45 days learning daily procedures, recipes, food prep, serving, bartending, supply ordering, and all the ins and outs of owning an establishment such as ours. Brittany's husband (Evan) will be present as time allows from his family farm.
During this transition period, you will still see both Butchie & Diana just as you have for the past 60 years. We would love for you to come visit, reminisce, share some stories about our place and the meaningful moments that you hold near and dear over the past six decades. Cash in those gift certificates, dust off your boots, put your favorite skirt on, pull out the turquoise jewelry, belly up to the bar or bring that big appetite and come see us during the month of October.
We have so much gratitude towards all of our loyal customers over the past 60 years. This establishment could not have been as successful as it has been without your support. Our employees over the past six decades have been vital to our success as well, from the first bartender we hired 20 year-old bar owners to the current bartenders we employ today. We can never thank all of these people enough for the weekends they gave up with their spouses and families to make our place so successful.
So what is on the horizon? Will Butchie's still be called Butchie's?
Butchie's will transition over to MASSEYS BACK 40 in early November of this year. The training officially begins in October, so saddle up and join us. Follow the Massey's page at the end of this post so you can get a bird's eye view of all the new things coming and watch the transition.
Now, a word from the Massey's (who reside in Dubois, IN):
We (Brittany, Evan, and our children) are incredibly honored and excited to saddle up for this next chapter.
With deep roots in this community of Dubois and a life already centered around family, farming, and the outdoors, this opportunity feels a whole lot like coming home. We understand that Butchie's is more than just a restaurant - it's a place filled with decades of stories, traditions, celebrations, friendships, and memories. Our goal isn't to forget what came before us, but to tip our hats to the legacy Butchie and Diana have built over the past six decades. We are fully prepared to put our hearts into what comes next.
Family will be the center of Massey's Back 40 Western Bar & Family Kitchen. We dream of a place where you can bring the kids for supper, pull up a chair with old friends, catch some live music, celebrate the big things and the little things, and always feel like there's a seat at the table just for you.
For us, this is more than just buying a business. This is taking a leap of faith, chasing a dream together, and choosing to plant even deeper roots in the community we call home.
We are incredibly grateful to Butchie and Diana for trusting us to carry this place forward. After meeting with them several times, it is so obvious to see the amount of heart they have poured into this place. These are big boots to fill, and we don't take this responsibility lightly.
We are ready to work hard, dream big, honor what's been built here, and raise our kids right alongside this adventure (just like Butchie & Diana did with their kids). Our hope is to create something our kids will be proud of for years to come.
So here's to the stories already written, the ones still to come, and a new trail ahead. We hope you will saddle up and join us for this new chapter, and come tip your hat to Butchie & Diana as they prepare to end their chapter of 60 years of hard work.
