Follow your passion. Terrible advice, in my experience. Passion followed the results for me, not the other way around. I didn't feel passionate about running a business in year one. I felt scared and behind. The passion showed up after I got competent enough to see it was working. Competence first. Passion catches up.

Almost everyone I coach has the same exact problem. It's not effort. The people who struggle most weren't lacking effort. They were overwhelmed by a plan too complicated to actually live with. The people who succeed almost always started smaller than they wanted to — one change, not ten, kept long enough to see it work.

That “eat less, move more” advice failed you on purpose.

Most people fail at nutrition for one reason, and it's not what you think. It's not willpower. It's a plan with too many moving parts. Work, kids, no time to think about seven rules at dinner. One or two real changes beat a perfect plan you'll quit by Thursday.

Skipping your warm-up isn't saving you time. It's borrowing against an injury you haven't had yet. Five minutes is all it takes to prep your joints for what's coming. Skip it enough times and you pay it back later, all at once, with interest.

Comment WARMUP and I'll send you my go-to 5-minute warm-up.

It took me 11 years to stop starting over. The messy middle nobody posts.

I called it passion. It wasn't. It was survival.

That's not dedication. That's what having no other option looks like. I didn't have a grand plan. I had a layoff, a year with no income, and people who needed help. Calling it passion now makes it sound like a choice. At the time it mostly felt like the only thing left to try.

I was never going to feel ready. So I stopped waiting to.

Here's what actually changed when I did. Set times. Default plans. Fewer decisions to make in the moment. The follow-through stopped depending on how I felt that day. It's a boring answer. It's also the only one that's held up for years, not weeks.

The best money I ever spent on this gym bought zero equipment.

It was knowing what was actually working. Real data instead of guessing — that's what actually moved things forward. The equipment was never the bottleneck. Knowing what was working was.

I almost shut this down in year one.

Not one bad day. A slow pile of doubt that almost won. Slim margins, long hours, wondering if I'd made an expensive mistake. What changed wasn't a breakthrough. One good month proved the model could work. Then I just decided to keep going one more month. That's most of what building something actually looks like.
