Nothing like a year-end run and sunshine 🏃‍♂️☀️

We had close to 1,500 kids from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades at Duluth Public Schools at this year’s Essentia Health Fit-n-Fun Run!

It’s a great way to reward the kids for another successful school year and a fun early start to their summer vacation!

Shortly before last year's Fitger's 5K, Evan Sieve's father unexpectedly passed away.

Evan wondered if he should still do the race, but he knew his dad would want him to do it. So he drove 3.5 hours from home, finished in 26:56, and returned the next day for the funeral.

“I could feel his presence with me while I ran," Evan said. "After that, I decided that I would run the Fitger's 5K every year as a tribute to him.”

This year, Evan upped the ante by signing up for the KP Challenge - the Saint Fennessy 4K, Fitger's 5K, and Park Point 5-Miler & 2-Mile Walk.

“It's so special to commemorate him by doing something I know he would’ve been proud of.”

We can't think of anything better, Evan. See you in July for Park Point ❤️

What started as a spontaneous decision turned into an unforgettable experience at the Fitger's 5K for Luke Konietzco

A teacher at Ordean East Middle School and member of the 148th Fighter Wing, Luke started running to help stay focused and prepared for both his jobs. Now, it's become something more personal than professional.

“It’s one simple thing that makes me feel like I’m starting my day off right or ending it on a high note," said Luke, who often trains with his brother. “By running with friends or family, I have a support system that motivates me to keep going and achieve any goals we set out for ourselves.”

We’re glad you had a great time, Luke, and thank you for your service. We hope to see you again soon!

The wind huffed and puffed, but you're the ones who blew the house down 🤩

1,480 registered participants, including 395 kids age 18 & under, make this the largest Fitger's 5K since 2019 👏

First timers, but this was no beginner's luck 🏃‍♂️

Ben Vaske, a 30-year-old from St. Paul, Minn., ran 15:10 to mark the fastest men’s winning time since Joe Moore’s event record of 14:53 in 2003. Vaske edged four-time defending and seven-time overall champion Scott Behling, who finished a close second in 15:12.

14-year-old Violet Sigsworth, meanwhile, became the event’s youngest-ever women’s champion when she crossed the line in 19:27. A ninth grader from Thunder Bay, Ont., Sigsworth has only been running competitively for three years, and recorded a personal record while running most of the race with her dad, Kip.

Both were running their first-ever Fitger's 5K. We sure hope it's not their last 😀
