Here’s your quick packing checklist for a stress-free lesson:

✅ A well-fitting swimsuit (one-piece or swim trunks preferred).
✅ Two reusable (non-disposable) swim diapers for all swimmers aged 3 and under—even if potty trained!
✅ At least one dry towel and a bag for wet clothes.

Note for Survival students: Goggles are not worn during survival lessons so children learn to navigate the water naturally!

Fact: Inflatable arm bands and posture-altering floaties can create a false sense of security and teach vertical muscle memory, making self-rescue floating much harder.

At PhD Swim School, our Survival Program teaches infants and children to instinctively roll onto their backs to float, breathe, and rest unassisted—giving them real, life-saving independence in the water!

“Instead of him panicking, he rolled right over on his back.”

Did you know timing meals before swim class makes a huge difference in comfort and safety? For our Survival Program students under age 3:

⏰ Avoid food for at least 2 hours before class.
⏰ For up to 4 hours prior, avoid heavy foods like meats, dairy, and whole fruits with skin.
👍 Light options like applesauce, bananas, or toast 4 hours prior are great!

Keeping bellies light helps your little one stay comfortable and focused while learning essential floating skills!

New parent questions we love answering:

Does my child need to be potty trained? Nope! But any child 3 and under will need two nondisposable swim diapers, available for purchase at our front desk.

Are ear plugs necessary? Not required, but allowed with a doctor’s note.

Are goggles allowed? No, we prepare students for real life situations, so goggles aren’t part of our lessons.

Do you offer private lessons? All of our classes are 1:1. We don’t do group classes.

Save this before your first class!

Float. Eyes in. Kick. Reaching arms. These are the building blocks of a student who can survive on their own in the water when they need to.

It’s Week 4 into lessons and students are working on becoming more independent in the water: floating (the skill that let’s them rest and call for help), eyes in (getting comfortable with being fully submerged in the water), kicking (building the strength to actually move in the water), and reaching arms (learning to pull themselves toward safety). On their own, these skills may look small BUT put together, they are what lets a young swimmer swim to the edge of the pool and hold on until help arrives.

This is the foundation everything else is built on. Enrollment is open now, join our waitlist and secure a spot for your child!
