There is a lot of information here, can you tell the difference between class 2 and class 3 if I showed you both bikes?????

Ultimately just ride your bicycle or electric with respect and have fun.

Hey, Crown Point👋 Our officers have been responding to a lot of calls regarding e-bikes lately.

E-bikes are regulated the same as bicycles in the State of Indiana, but there are some rules you should be mindful of before hitting the road.🚲

‼️All e-bikes must have pedals. No pedals = an electric dirt bike, which is considered a motorized vehicle
❌E-bikes are not permitted on the sidewalk in the downtown business district or any B1 area per City Ord. 74.09
📋No license, insurance or registration is required for e-bikes
⛑️Helmets are required for Class 3 riders
⚡️The e-bike motor must be 750W or less
1️⃣5️⃣Rider must be at least 15 years old for Class 3 e-bikes

Ride safe. Follow the law. Share the road.

So what’s the difference?????

If it doesn’t have pedals that will propel the bike with the battery turned off, it’s not a bicycle. It’s legally a moped or motorcycle.

That means it does not belong on the bike path or the sidewalk because it is a motor vehicle.

This graphic lists the laws, but what does any of it mean. If you have any questions about electric bicycles please reach out. We believe E Bicycles are a game changer for riders needing a little assistance, but there is a lot of gray area in the definitions of what is legal and what isn’t.
