Dyer County Schools Mourns the Loss of a Student

DYER COUNTY, TN – It is with profound sadness that Dyer County Schools announces the passing of Nolan Grills, a cherished student of the Newbern Elementary School family.
Nolan passed away surrounded with love after a courageous and inspiring battle with cancer.
The Grills family’s roots run deep in Dyer County Schools. Nolan’s mother, Jennifer, teaches at Northview Middle School, and his father, Andy, serves our district as a member of the Dyer County School Board. A family that has given so much to the children of this county now grieves the loss of their own, and our entire school community grieves with them.
Throughout his illness, Nolan showed remarkable courage, kindness, faith, and strength. His sweet spirit touched classmates, teachers, and staff across our district, and his loss leaves a void that will be deeply felt.
“Words cannot express the sorrow we feel at the loss of Nolan,” said Director of Dyer County Schools Cheryl Mathis. “He fought his battle with a courage far beyond his years, and he inspired every one of us who had the privilege of knowing him. Jennifer and Andy are the most amazing parents, and we share in their loss. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with his family, his friends, and all who loved him. Dyer County Schools stands with the Grills family during this incredibly difficult time. Nolan will forever be remembered by all of us and memorialized by the Class of 2034.”
Grief counselors will be available today at Nolan’s school as well as Northview Middle School and will remain on campus as long as needed to support students and staff. Parents who believe their child may need additional support are encouraged to reach out to their child’s school office, teacher, or school counselor.
We ask our community to keep the Grills family in their prayers and to respect their privacy as they grieve.
