The East Lansing Environmental Stewardship Program focuses on restoring the health of park biotic communities by removing problematic invasive plant species and replacing them with native species. The program seeks to share information with the community about different aspects of park ecosystems and how best to sustain them. A couple projects we’re really proud of! Photo 1 is the L5 and Beyond sculpture at the corner of Lake Lansing. The flowers planted around it complement the orange sculpture. Mostly, but not all, native plants. Photo 2 is a thriving mini native garden at the edge of Bailey Park.

Sisters? We're close!..but yet so far! Can you spot the differences?

Meet our native woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata) & the invasive dame's rocket (Hesperis matronalis). I'd call it phlox's evil twin, except- these plants are unrelated!

Though both plants flower in showy shades of pink to purple around this time of year, they are entirely different plants with entirely different effects on our ecosystem.

Don't believe us? Look closely. Native phlox has five petals- invasive dame's rocket has only four. Furthermore, native phlox has smooth, opposite leaves (paired at stem) while the invasive dame's rocket's hairy, toothed leaves alternate sides around the stem.

BREAKING: European frog-bit has now invaded our community. EFB is infesting the Grand River near Waverly and Moore's River Drive. MMCISMA also reports EFB on the Looking Glass River near Babcock's Landing.

European frog-bit is an aggressive, invasive aquatic plant. You'll know it by its floating, coin-size leaves and tiny tri-petal flowers.

EFB explodes into a monoculture quickly. Without its co-evolved predators, it forms massive, dense mats. EFB eats up all the light and space and oxygen, which chokes out our native plants, fish, and birds. It also ruins recreational areas for fishers and hunters and boaters, snagging fishing lines, harming wildlife populations, and stopping up boat props. This stuff is bad news for our Great Lakes.

Everyone, please keep an eye out for EFB to remove & report while out on the water this summer. And always aim to CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY!

Thank you to Colin Sayers for choosing to complete his Eagle Scout project with East Lansing’s Environmental Stewardship Program! On May 9 we had a beautiful day to follow through on over a year of planning and actually mulch the trail through the woods at Albert A White Park. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out and lent a hand! Stay tuned for the new signage this summer!
