The 10 Essentials Are Not Just for Hiking

Whether you are heading out for a hike, paddle, fishing trip, hunt, camping weekend, or another outdoor adventure, carrying the right essentials can make a major difference when plans change.

A practical outdoor essentials list should include:

Navigation tools
Sun protection
Extra clothing and insulation
A light source
First aid supplies
Fire-starting materials
Tools for basic repairs
Extra food
Extra water or a way to treat water
Emergency shelter

The exact gear may look different depending on the activity, season, location, and length of the trip. A paddler may need different equipment than a hunter, angler, or winter hiker, but the purpose remains the same: be prepared to stay safe, warm, hydrated, and able to respond when something unexpected happens.

Before heading outside, check the weather, tell someone where you are going, know your route, and make sure your gear matches the conditions.

Preparation is part of every successful outdoor adventure.

NYSOGA has been supporting New York’s outdoor guides since 1891, and we would love to help more guides across the state get connected.

The New York State Outdoor Guides Association is New York’s oldest and largest professional guiding organization. We support licensed guides in hiking, paddling, hunting, fishing, whitewater, birding, camping, backcountry travel, outdoor education, and more.

NYSOGA helps promote professional guides, supports strong safety standards, works with the DEC on guide licensing and regulations, and provides training opportunities for both new and experienced guides.

But it’s also more than that.

It’s community.
It’s connection.
It’s people who understand muddy boots, early mornings, wild weather, trail stories, fish tales, camp coffee, and the deep love of helping others experience New York’s outdoors safely and confidently.

If you are a licensed guide in New York, we would love to have you as part of NYSOGA!

And if you know someone who guides, tag them, send this their way, or share it with your outdoor community.

Professional standards matter.
Community matters.
And let’s be honest, we do some pretty fun stuff too.

See comments for our list of regional guides.

I have some private sessions with a client this summer for various classes and skill sets, one being wildlife tracking. When starting tracking I suggest start with a small most common wildlife suspects and get to know them. Know the key differences for instance between canine and feline. Try to place an animal in a category of gait in one of these - Walker,Waddler,Bounder,Hopper. Watch your pets walk and take notice of the gaits and how they place their feet. Look out at your bird feeders and watch the squirrels and their movement patterns. Get resources like books, dvds etc. ,pick a mentor or seek tracking clubs. Start small and spend time in the woods. I guarantee your mental and physical health will appreciate it. Most of all ~ Get Outdoors !
