Meet Our Mentor Spotlight, Bill! 🎉
My running journey began about 20 years ago as I was looking for a way to keep fit. After an internet search, I signed up for a Fleet Feet running program. Not knowing anyone, I was nervous and intimidated. After the first workout, this was exactly what I needed and was looking for. The program stressed this group was not a “me vs them” mentality. It was an “us, we are in this together” group. Everyone was there to travel their own journey with the complete support of the entire group.
After 2 years of being a participant, I felt sharing my experiences and encouraging others was a way to give back to the running community. This led to becoming a mentor and after 15 years, I have not looked back. Being part of Fleet Feet has brought me such joy in encouraging participants that as a runner you can accomplish so much more than you think. Providing the confidence goes along with the physical training. In addition, friendship have been made with so many people over the years. There is an instant bond runners have because our journeys are different, yet the struggles are shared and embraced.
As for anyone considering whether to join the program, it can change your life. Many people say, “I cannot run.” My response is you definitely can and this program will help you with your journey and you will be successful. Do not compare yourself to others. Your journey is the most important one for you. As a mentor, I will help you achieve your goal. Just remember that it will be hard, but you are strong and will support your success.
In retirement, my hobby is visiting other Fleet Feet stores as I travel. As of today, 42 stores have been visited. At each store, questions are asked about the running programs offered. Most have programs, some do not and one reason is that there is not a safe place to run. That saddened me. The Syracuse, NY running community is one of the best in the country. Often I shared with others that what we have should never be overlooked. Embrace the tough workouts, share the success with friends and just keep running.
