Parents and swimmers,

Hope everyone had a great summer vacation. Our YMCA short course swim season is fast approaching, and I am starting it off a little early with 2-hour practices Tuesday and Thursday 5 pm to 7 pm. We will be working on lots of kicking and getting our swimming muscles back into shape. We will also work on any techniques or strokes you want to work on, just let me know. Also, our season starts September 3. Our times and practices for the upcoming season are going to be the same as it was for last year 5 pm to 7 pm.

Also the work outs in August are free to anyone that would like to come swim but you do have to be a Y member.

Thanks
Coach Dave

Today, we will be discussing a common mistake frequently observed in breaststroke technique, along with an effective solution to rectify it.

In breaststroke, maintaining an impeccable line while propelling forward with the kick is crucial. The swiftest position is achieved when the swimmer achieves full extension and propels forward with the legs. Ideally, the kick should be applied simultaneously as the body, head, and arms reach a streamlined position, thereby maximizing the propulsive force generated.

However, if swimmers fail to maintain a streamlined position, they risk compromising their stroke efficiency, speed, and overall distance per stroke. In the showcased example, our swimmer struggles to sustain a tight line as she reaches full extension. Notice how her arms separate in the initial clip.

To address this issue, one effective approach involves encouraging the swimmer to maintain a tight line in front and deploy their body to lift while simultaneously sliding the hips forward, similar to performing a cobra stretch. It is worth noting that this drill can pose a challenge, as swimmers may tend to either press down or scull with their hands to initiate the lift.

In the second clip, our swimmer successfully demonstrates the correct technique by employing her body to lift, sliding her hips forward, while maintaining an excellent line.

Moreover, this drill enables swimmers to develop proper timing, helps them understand how to utilize the body’s momentum to drive the torso forward into the line, and subsequently continue this forward propulsion with the legs.

There are various ways to incorporate this drill into your training sessions. One recommended method involves executing two strokes with the arms in front and subsequently performing a full stroke, ensuring impeccable timing and maintaining the desired body line.

Observe how, in the final clip, our swimmer greatly improves in reaching and maintaining the desired line.

We encourage you to give this drill a try! Enhance your breaststroke technique, streamline your movements, and witness significant improvements in your overall swim performance. 12/09/2023
