πŸ₯‹ A little overdue...but definitely worth celebrating!

A couple of weeks ago, our Basic students stepped onto the mat and demonstrated what they'd been working toward at their latest belt test.

And they earned some new belts! πŸ‘Š

Testing gives students an opportunity to put all those repetitions together and experience something important:

Preparation β†’ Challenge β†’ Accomplishment.

They have to remember their material.

Perform while people are watching.

Work through nerves.

Accept corrections.

And keep going when something doesn't happen perfectly.

That's where confidence comes fromβ€”not being told β€œyou can do it,” but collecting experiences that prove:

β€œI DID it.”

Congratulations to all of our Basic students who promoted! πŸŽ‰

Enjoy the new belt...

Then get back on the mat and start working toward what's next.

πŸ₯‹ SELF-CONTROL...even when things get exciting!

Our Pre-Kyuki-Do students are working on the Life Skill of Self-Control, and this week we found a pretty fun way to practice it...

Grappling warm-ups! πŸ˜„

When you're 3–6 years old and rolling, crawling, grabbing, balancing and working with a partner, it's VERY easy to get excited.

And that's exactly why it's such good practice.

Can I control my body?

Can I listen when I'm excited?

Can I use the right amount of strength?

Can I stop when I'm asked?

Can I respect my partner and remember that their safety matters too?

That's Self-Control in action. πŸ’ͺ🧠

Along the way, our students are also developing body awareness, coordination, balance and confidence while becoming better training partners.

And, of course, our coaches couldn't let the kids have all the fun...so they jumped in too! πŸ˜‚

We don't want our students to only understand what Self-Control means.

We want them practicing what it feels like to actually use it.

Because eventually that skill leaves the mat with them...

To school.

To the playground.

To home.

And anywhere else excitement, frustration, or emotions might tempt them to act before they think.

Great work, PKKD! πŸ‘Š

πŸ₯‹ 36 CANDIDATES. ONE FINAL TEST. ONE STEP CLOSER TO BLACK BELT.

Black Belt doesn't happen because someone attended enough classes.

It happens after years of showing up.

Practicing when things weren't easy.

Being corrected.

Getting tired.

Getting frustrated.

Coming back.

And slowly becoming capable of things that once seemed impossible.

On Saturday, October 3rd at 10:00 AM, AKF Martial Arts Academy of Eau Claire will host the Final Black Belt Advancement Test for 36 candidates from Eau Claire, Hudson, New Richmond, and Ladysmith as they prepare for their November Black Belt Promotion Weekend.

And we'd love for our community to come watch. πŸ‘Š

These candidates will be challenged through grappling, forms, sparring, stretching, Black Belt Thesis presentations and, finally...

πŸ’₯ BOARD BREAKING.

But there's something else we want people to see that day.

Nobody gets to Black Belt alone.

There was a parent who drove them to class.

An instructor who corrected them.

A teammate who gave them another round.

Someone who held the board.

Someone who encouraged them when they struggled.

Someone who expected more when they were capable of more.

That's why we say:

THEY TEST INDIVIDUALLY. WE GET THERE TOGETHER.

If your child has ever wondered what becoming a Black Belt looks like...

Come watch.

If you're curious about martial arts...

Come watch.

If you're already part of the martial arts community...

Come support these candidates as they take one of their final steps toward a goal years in the making.

Spectators are welcome.

Eligible martial arts students who would like to participate and assist can register by September 30th:

πŸ₯‹ β€œI KNOW HOW TO DO IT.”

Great.

Now do it better.

Then differently.

Then cleaner.

Then faster.

Then under pressure.

Then help someone else learn it.

One of the easiest traps after learning something is believing that because we CAN do it, we're done growing.

We're not.

At AKF, learning the skill is often just the beginning.

Once you know what to do, we can start asking:

How well can you do it?

Can you improve one detail?

Can you find another way?

Can you make it more efficient?

Can you perform it when you're tired?

Can you teach it to somebody else?

That's where something bigger than martial arts starts happening.

We're developing the habit of looking at something we've already accomplished and thinking:

β€œWhat's the next level?”

Not because what you did wasn't good enough.

Because now you're capable of more.

That's a mindset we want our students carrying everywhere.

Got an A?

What did you learn from earning it?

Made the team?

How do you become someone the team can depend on?

Earned the belt?

What kind of student are you going to be while wearing it?

Made SWAT or DELTA?

What are you going to DO with the opportunity?

Earned Black Belt?

Congratulations.

What's next?

Don't settle simply because you discovered you CAN.

Learn it. Improve it. Challenge it. Share it.

Then find the next level.

πŸ₯‹ What does self-control actually look like?

It doesn’t begin with staying quiet, standing still, or simply doing what you’re told.

It begins with AWARENESS.

β€œNotice it before you become it!”

Before children can control a reaction, they must learn to recognize what is happening inside them:

πŸ‘€ β€œI’m becoming frustrated.”

πŸ‘€ β€œMy voice is getting louder.”

πŸ‘€ β€œI’m about to interrupt.”

πŸ‘€ β€œI’m distracted and need to refocus.”

At AKF Martial Arts Academy, we don’t expect children to never feel angry, nervous, frustrated, or overly excited. We teach them how to recognize those feelings early enough to make a better choice.

This is Week #1 of our 8-Week Self-Control Black Belt Challengeβ€”and these lessons are meant to travel far beyond the training floor.

Parents, try asking your child:

β€œWhat are you noticing right now?”

Learn more and see this week’s Awareness challenges:

Awareness creates the opportunity to choose. That is where self-control begins.

πŸ₯‹ Another Step Forward for Our Basic Students!

Congratulations to our Basic students who tested and earned their new ranks last week!

Every promotion represents more than learning the next set of techniques.

It's showing up.

Listening.

Practicing.

Getting frustrated sometimes.

Trying again.

And eventually being able to say:

β€œI earned this.”

A special shout-out to Ali, who stepped up to her board break, accepted the challenge, and earned her GREEN BELT! 🟒

That Green Belt also means something else...

Ali has earned her spot in our Intermediate Class!

With that opportunity come new techniques, new expectations, new challenges, and another chance to discover what she's capable of.

That's how this journey works.

Accomplish one goal. Celebrate it. Then get ready for the next challenge.

Congratulations to Ali and ALL of our Basic students who promoted!

We're proud of the work you've put in. Now let's see what you do with that next belt.

πŸ₯‹ What do kids do when life gets hard?

That's one of the biggest questions behind everything we teach at AKF Martial Arts Academy.

Because we can't remove every obstacle our children will face.

But we can help prepare them to face those obstacles with confidence.

Over the past eight weeks, our students have been studying Perseverance: Determination Despite Difficulty.

And we've broken it into eight practical lessons kids can use far beyond the martial arts mat:

πŸ’ͺ Tenacity: I CAN DO HARD THINGS!

🎯 Determination: I FINISH WHAT I START!

🌱 Endurance: NOT YET!

🧘 Patience: CALM WINS!

πŸ“ˆ Diligence: LITTLE BY LITTLE!

🀝 Commitment: I KEEP MY PROMISES!

🧠 Being Resolute: I CHOOSE MY ATTITUDE!

πŸ”₯ Dedication: ALL IN!

Think about those for a moment.

Those aren't just martial arts lessons.

They're tools for handling a difficult assignment, learning a new skill, dealing with disappointment, working toward a goal, navigating friendships, and eventually facing the challenges of adulthood.

That's why we believe martial arts should develop more than physical skills.

The kick matters. The form matters. The belt matters. But who the student becomes because of the journey matters even more.

In our newest blog, we bring all eight lessons together and share how parents can reinforce this Black Belt mindset at home.

πŸ“– Read the full article:

Perseverance: Eight Lessons, One Mindset, a Lifetime of Growth https://www.martialartseauclaire.com/perseverance-eight-lessons-one-mindset-a-lifetime-of-growth/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Here's a great conversation starter for your family tonight:

"Which of these eight lessons do you think you need the most right nowβ€”and why?"

You might be surprised by the answer.

We can't promise our kids an easy road.

We can help them become the kind of people who know what to do when the road gets hard.

That's Perseverance.

Determination Despite Difficulty.

πŸ₯‹ So...what do you do when you can already do the full splits?

You keep growing.

While the rest of class was working on flexibility, these two Leadership students were already all the way down.

Goal accomplished.

So I handed them a book.

πŸ“– If we're done stretching the body...let's stretch the mind.

And yes, apparently you CAN read while doing the full splits. πŸ˜„

There's an important lesson in these pictures.

Reaching one goal shouldn't be permission to stop. It should give you the opportunity to reach for the next one.

Sometimes growth means going farther.

Sometimes it means getting better.

Sometimes it means learning something completely different.

And sometimes it means taking something you already know how to do and finding a new way to challenge yourself with it.

That's part of what we're trying to teach our Leadership students:

Never become so satisfied with what you CAN do that you stop discovering what else you're CAPABLE of doing.

There is always another way to grow.

Body. Mind. Character. Leadership.

And apparently...

Reading comprehension while doing the splits. πŸ˜‚

πŸŽ’ Back to school means more than new backpacks, new teachers, and new schedules.

It also means new challenges.

New classmates.

New expectations.

New opportunities to get something wrong.

And for some kids, a lot of energy spent wondering...

What will everyone think of me?

Here's something we don't talk about enough:

Confidence affects a child's ability to learn.

When a child's attention is consumed by worrying about fitting in, making mistakes, being embarrassed, or what someone else might say, there's less attention available for what's actually happening in front of them.

A confident child isn't a child who never feels nervous.

It's a child who's developing the belief:

"Whatever happens, I can handle it."

That belief gives them the freedom to raise their hand.

Ask the question.

Make the mistake.

Try again.

And focus on learning instead of everything happening around them.

πŸ₯‹ That's one of the reasons we believe the lessons practiced on the mat matter so much everywhere else.

We wrote more about this in our latest Back-to-School article:

Back to School: Confidence Gives Kids the Freedom to Learn

https://www.martialartseauclaire.com/back-to-school-confidence-gives-kids-the-freedom-to-learn/

As your child heads back to school, consider asking a different question:

Not just...

"Is my child ready for school?"

But...

"Does my child believe they're capable of handling what school brings?"
