One of the best things to see with a new horse. 🖤🐴

Batman dropped down for a good roll in the pasture today. Rolling is such a simple thing, but it can tell you a lot. A horse willingly putting himself in such a vulnerable position is generally a good sign that he’s beginning to feel safe, comfortable and relaxed in his surroundings.

For a horse who just recently left the racetrack and had his entire world changed, these little moments mean a lot to me.

Roll away, Batman. I think you’re figuring out that retirement life isn’t so bad. 🖤

Bringing an off-the-track Thoroughbred home isn’t always as simple as turning them out in a pasture and letting them “just be a horse.”

For many of these horses, their entire world changes overnight.

They go from a very structured racing environment—stalls, scheduled meals, intense exercise, constant handling and a predictable daily routine—to suddenly being expected to live like a regular pasture horse.

And believe it or not, some of them really don’t know how to do that yet. 😂

That transition can come with a lot of stress. They may initially lose weight, develop ulcers, have digestive upset or even be at increased risk for colic. Their appetite and manure need to be watched closely, and they have to learn things most pasture horses take for granted—grazing throughout the day, navigating herd dynamics, settling down and simply relaxing.

Even positive changes are still changes, and horses can be incredibly sensitive to them.

So right now we are watching Batman very closely. 🦇 We’re paying attention to how much he’s eating and drinking, his manure, his body condition, his behavior and just how he’s adjusting overall.

The goal isn’t to rush him into anything.

For now, his biggest job is learning that he doesn’t have to be a racehorse anymore.

He just gets to be a horse. ❤️🐴

Remember ladies… when adding a new horse to the pasture, always make sure it’s the same color as the others so your husband won’t notice. 😂

We now have FOUR bays.

At this point, I’m pretty sure he just looks out there and thinks, “Yep… still horses.” 🤷‍♀️🐴🐴🐴🐴

Bandit is 29 years old now, and I’ve had the privilege of calling him mine for the last 10 years. ❤️🐴

He has been such an amazing horse, and at this stage of his life, I never take a single ride for granted.

Every time I climb on his back, I’m aware that one day there will be a “last ride.” I don’t know when that will be, and I’m certainly in no hurry to find out. Until then, I’ll keep watching him, listening to him, and trusting him to tell me when he’s ready to be done.

Our last Morab continued to enjoy being ridden until he was 33 years old, so maybe Bandit and I still have plenty of miles left together. ❤️

For now, I’m just grateful for every ride, every trail, and every additional memory this old man gives me.

There’s something incredibly special about growing old with a good horse. 🐴❤️
