Our deepest condolences to the Abbot Family. Joan was a wonderful and kind friend who was always there to help and make you laugh. She helped the JKA El Paso so much, we will miss her very much.

Rest in Peace Joan Abbot. I just received the news that my old friend Joan Abbot has passed away. I’m not sure about the dates, but sometime in the late 1950s , or early 1960s Gary and Joan started a karate dojo in Phoenix AZ. Soon after they requested a Japanese instructor from the JKA. In 1964 Sensei Koyama arrived. I met Gary and Joan in 1980. I had great respect for them. They were responsible for bringing Koyama Sensei to us. Gary passed a few years later. However, I got to know Joan quite well. She was everyone’s dojo mom. If you had a problem, you could go to Joan. Every dojo has a dojo mom, hopefully. Koyama’s 7th Street dojo had three or four. Joan was also a good drinking buddy. A good joke teller. She did my taxes for years. We all miss these karate masters when they pass. But, there are a lot of support people along the way that make our lives so much more pleasant. They are very important people in their own rite. Joan I’m going to miss you! Shawn
