72-pound Blue Cat BAMA BEAST on the Tennessee River.
Savannah Woods landed a 72-pound blue catfish on April 30th while bouncing cut skipjack on the bottom of the Tennessee River near Guntersville Dam.
She tells Field & Stream it was the biggest fish of her life. “It was a shocker,” she says. “That’s the hardest workout I’ve ever put in while reeling in a fish. It took me a solid 15 minutes of fighting to finally bring it to the boat.”
Woods says the fish weighed 72.6 pounds and measured 50-inches long with a 38-inch girth. At that size, it could have shattered the International Game Fish Association’s 50-pound line class record for the women’s division by more than 30 pounds. But she opted to release it instead of having it certified and killing the fish.
“I used my hands to grab it by the mouth and pulled it up into the boat,” she recalls. “Then we brought it on board and weighed it with our digital scales before releasing it back into the river.”
Woods targets blue cats regularly on the Tennessee River with her husband and two children. She says they hone in on bridges, rock piles, and deep holes. “They are some of the coolest fish out there,” she says. “We love going after them. My son caught a 42-pounder right before I hooked into this one.
