MASTERING FOOTWORK AT FIRST BASE You have to start somewhere and these two throws are the most common you will need to learn if you want to master first base. Steps 1 and 2 are the most in your control and are things you must be able to perfect and do every time. The most common reason I see first baseman miss balls or miss play throws is because their setup was wrong, or they didn’t have the right prep step. I see many players only working in the attack and not understanding having a good setup and prep step will make the attack that much better. If you have seen a lot of my other videos, you can see that I practice perfection. I learn the little movements that are needed to be successful and I find ways to break them down. Once I get one movement down, I go into the next, then onto the next, and then I put it all together. If you do that every day over the course of a season or a year, that’s where you will see the biggest gains! If you are a catcher in baseball, you know it is only a matter of time before the umpire takes a foul ball. When it happens, do not just stand there, take charge. Pick up the ball and call time, even though it is already implied, to deflect attention away from the umpire. Then walk straight out to your pitcher on the mound. He may ask what is going on, but all you need to say is that you are giving the umpire a moment to recover and that you are waiting for the verbal cue before heading back behind the plate.
