When an athlete comes in fatigued or stressed, my first adjustment is usually intensity.

If the plan calls for a 3RM but the athlete clearly doesn’t have it that day, forcing it may turn training into a failed test.

Instead, we might go from a 3RM to 3 × 3 at a submaximal load. Quality reps. Good intent. Enough stimulus to move forward.

Research on autoregulation supports adjusting training based on an athlete’s current readiness rather than blindly following predetermined loads.

But there’s nuance: being tired doesn’t automatically mean going easy. Sometimes intensity should stay while volume comes down.

That’s coaching.

What adaptation are we trying to create—and what does this athlete need today to get it?

The program is the plan.
The athlete in front of you is the reality.

Turns out the key to surviving the zombie apocalypse is pretty simple:

Bring Coach Niko for protection.

Bring Eva because she can make eggs.

Bring Colin because he’s smart, crafty…and slightly slower than you.
