Pilates and Beyond

Pilates and Beyond Located in Royal Oak, Michigan, Pilates & Beyond is a private Pilates studio. Bayside Pilates is a Pilates studio located in Oakland, California.

In 2000, Jodie Colone started a small business in Berkeley, CA teaching Pilates. When she left the Bay Area for England, she contacted Kerri Gonen and asked her to open a studio in the East Bay so that her clients would be able to continue their Pilates practices. One of those clients was Faye Stevenson. Faye had been working with Jodie in preparation for entering the Romana's Pilates Certification Program. Once she opened Bayside Pilates in Alameda, Kerri became Faye's second Pilates Guild trained teacher and saw her enter the program. In 2004, Kerri and her family left the area at which point Kerri sold Bayside Pilates to Faye Stevenson. In 2011, Faye was expecting her first child. She and her husband decided to close the studio in Alameda and relocate to Oakland so that Faye could better balance her roles as studio owner, Pilates instructor, and mom.

It's nearly time to talk Hands, Feet and Necks @ Dzanc House in Ypsilanti. There's a lot that I love about MELT. Right now I'm thinking of how it can serve as a powerful turning point for those struggling with chronic issues. Swing by and feel for yourself.

We inhabitants of planet earth are coming up on a balance point, the Autumn Equinox. The idea of sitting in stillness is welcome what with all the work I’ve been doing lately though it could just as easily pass me by were I not to deliberately acknowledge the Equinox. I like to invite more people to make an event of such moments because of all the greatness that comes when two or more are gathered. On 9/23 I will be celebrating my arrival in practice at Some Peace & Quiet with a collaborative offering with Susanne. We are pooling our talents to offer a Guided Embodiment and Sound Bath in the tranquil living room space. I’ve been loving setting up my work space inside Some Peace and Quiet and I’m looking forward to experiencing a sound bath for the first time. Two links in my biosite to learn more or reserve your spot.

Dancing this way and in this place means a lot to me. It is a homecoming and the realization of a wish made decades ago. When I consider the path that brought me to this moment, it is curved, obscured, and accented with surprises. It brings me such comfort to be in this place, amongst strangers with whom I feel a sense of comfort and affinity because of this common place and activity preference. I’m warmed through and through by the sense of co-regulation I experience when I move and groove in sync with others. We had a lovely day on the Dzanc House - Literary & Art Programs, Residency & Gallery front porch. It was fabulous to welcome so many newcomers and to talk feet and self-care with so many wonderfully thoughtful people. A thousand thank you’s to Amanda May and her team for producing such a fantastic community event. And thank you to my super fun and crafty family for making it the quickest 7 hours of business promotion I’ve ever had.

I’m highlighting my MELT offerings for the next few months and I’m kicking it all off this Saturday at the Historic South Side Stroll produced by my friend Amanda May Dzanc House - Literary & Art Programs, Residency & Gallery. It’s a fun community event with many artists selling their wares, tasty food, and music. I’d be thrilled to see you there!

What do we find at Center?
At the center of a Pilates practice is the mover, finding their way from the inside out.
At the center of a Somatic Experiencing process is the experiencer, discovering what is within waiting to emerge and resolve.
At the center of a CranioSacral treatment is the Inner Physician, grateful to finally be acknowledged and supported in their important work.
At the center of a MELT / MMIA practice is the bodymind, mapping landmarks over the internal terrain.
At the center of each song is the singer, realizing that beautiful resonance comes from their very core.
At the center of my practice, be it in movement, hands on techniques, or community musicking, is YOU (not ME).
WE co-create a field when we come together that reverberates in both our well-being. I use what I have learned to help each person I’m with remember something within themselves that they may have forgotten or ignored. It leads to beautiful and surprising unfoldings that I am honored to witness.

Healing possibilities and the human population - 1:1. For each living person, there’s a unique healing process. There are certainly themes and general trends but our healing journey reflects us and is ours alone to take. AND we are inherently social and relational so it’s helpful and often essential to have company along the way. (My son set up the camera so he could capture our first outing in CA together this summer. You can see the wind rumpling everything I’m wearing. I am reminded of how happy we were in that moment as I look at this photo.)

It’s been a week since ViewFest 2026. I’m just getting my bearings with my new practice and so I didn’t post until now. What a wonderful event, I’m so glad that space was designated to come together around mental health. It was great to be with my new collaborators from Some Peace & Quiet and Firefly Spa, to see friends from Irene’s, to talk with so many people helping others as a daily practice, all under the shade of beautiful trees with occasional fresh breezes making the heat bearable. After that I headed into Detroit for a good chat with SE colleagues. That day was the first time networking hasn’t left me tired out, and with that I’m reminded how nurturing it is to connect with like-minded folx. Here’s to more connecting and healing together. (I’m feeling love for all the healing helpers I know)

MUSIC is a verb. It’s an essential human activity that scholars have traced back to archaic humans. There are two instances in which we’ve all been confined to solitude or limitations on social activity - the recent global pandemic and when air and weather conditions demand that we stay indoors. In both, musicking has been a salve for me. Those of us who love Music Together certainly miss our time together as we stay cooped up indoors and while my cats are more swayed by cat TV than my strumming and singing, I’m pretty sure that my youngest music friends would welcome a musical diversion to break up the monotony of confinement. Music Together is very much about the magic that happens when we are all together, but it’s just as much about what happens in between those times when we are home and noodling around on our own. All it takes to make music is your body was my teaching theme this week and I didn’t know it when I made my plans, but by the end of the week, that sure seems relevant.

There were a few circumstances in his childhood that carried all the way forward to the work that would define Joe Pilates’s legacy decades past his living years :
- not engaging much with other children at school set him in a position to observe their playful movements with great attention to detail
- escaping to the forest of Hardt where he observed animals with equal focus
- practicing gymnastics with conscious intent to unify body and mind
- voracious study of an anatomy book gifted to him by the doctor who attended his baby sister in her last days of life
- effectively helping his mother alleviate her physical pain with exercises

Joseph Pilates had little at his disposal, great passion honed with focus, and a notable quantity of determination.
