The 4th of July, or Independence Day, matters because it marks the day in 1776 when the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.

So it’s both civic and personal: a reminder of how the U.S. started, and an excuse to be with the people you love.

Independence Day is a federal holiday. Most people don’t work, so it’s one of the few days in summer when family can actually gather without other conflicts and play some mini golf and enjoy SnoBiz while you’re there.
