🏐 COACH SPOTLIGHT: BEVERLY ZIEBELL

Some people find their way into coaching because they played the sport. Others find their way into coaching because they simply can't stay away from it.

For Coach Beverly Ziebell, volleyball has always been a big part of her life.

Beverly grew up in the Bark River area and attended Bark River-Harris Schools before moving to Escanaba shortly after graduation. She later attended Bay de Noc College, where she studied Accounting.

But her real passion? Volleyball.

When Beverly and her husband bought their home in Escanaba, one of the first things they did was put up a volleyball net in the backyard. Sunday afternoons quickly became a regular gathering, with friends coming over to play backyard volleyball.

That love for the game eventually made its way to the school court.

When Beverly's youngest daughter, Katie, was in 8th grade at Holy Name, the school needed a volleyball coach. Beverly decided to give it a try—and 15 years later, she's still going strong.

Over the years, she has coached middle school, freshman, JV and now Varsity volleyball.

And what keeps her coming back?

The players.

“There is nothing more rewarding than watching these girls progress to the players they have become.”

For Beverly, volleyball is about much more than winning games. She believes school sports help prepare students for life beyond the gym by teaching discipline, structure, communication, work ethic, confidence, how to handle pressure, and so much more.

Her goal for the Escanaba volleyball program is simple: make it fun, keep the pressure to a minimum, and make sure every player walks away with wonderful memories of her volleyball experience.

That backyard volleyball net may have started as a place for friends and family to play on Sunday afternoons, but that love for the game has grown into 15 years of coaching and countless athletes impacted along the way.

🏀 Junior Eskymos Basketball starts THIS Saturday! 🏀

🎾 GIRLS TENNIS TOURNAMENT RECAP 🎾

What a way to open tournament season! The Eskymos traveled to Kingsford for their annual invitational on Saturday 09/12 and came away Tournament Champions! 🏆🧡🖤

Escanaba reached 7 of 8 flight finals and won 4 championships!

🏆 #2 Doubles: Lily Benetti & Isabella Noblet
The duo battled their way through a tough championship match against Kingsford, winning 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Their chemistry and teamwork continue to get better every match!

🏆 #3 Doubles: Emma Landwehr & Alexa DeGrand
A first-time pairing that came through in a big way! After defeating Norway, they battled West Iron County in the finals and won the deciding 10-point tiebreaker 10-7 after splitting the first two sets.

🏆 #3 Singles: Varrah Veeser
Varrah controlled both of her matches, defeating Norway 6-2, 6-3 before taking the championship over West Iron County 6-3, 6-1. A great performance and a big step forward in her game!

🏆 #4 Singles: Amelia Alimenti
And this one clinched the tournament championship for Escanaba! Amelia won the first set 6-2, fell behind 1-3 in the second, then fought back to win six straight games and take the set 6-3.

Even more impressive? Amelia was the only 9th grader in the lineup, competing alongside 11 juniors and seniors. With the tournament coming down to her match, she handled the pressure and delivered when her team needed her most. 💪🎾

🏈 COACHES SPOTLIGHT #3: BAILEY LAMB 🏈

This week, we’re getting to know the man leading our Varsity Football program — Coach Bailey Lamb.

🏈 ROOTS RUN DEEP
If you’re from Escanaba, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that Bailey is born and raised right here in Escanaba.

He graduated from Escanaba High School before heading to Michigan Tech, where he played football, and later Central Michigan University, studying Kinesiology and Education.

But his connection to coaching started long before he ever stepped onto a college campus.

Bailey’s dad coached him growing up in almost every sport — and Bailey says he was “the luckiest kid in the world” to have that time with him.

“He is my superhero.”

After playing, Bailey wanted to give kids the same kind of experience he had growing up — a place to learn, compete, grow and make memories.

⚾🏀🏈 A LOT OF COACHING MILES
Since graduating high school, Bailey has coached every year. His experience includes five years with Escanaba Junior & Senior Cubs Legion baseball, one year of 5th grade basketball, five seasons of JV baseball, one year as a JV football assistant, and five seasons as the Varsity Football Head Coach.

So, yeah... coaching has pretty much been part of the plan.

🏈 WHY FOOTBALL?
Bailey loves spending time with kids, helping make their experience memorable and watching them grow into who they’re becoming.

And football?

“Best game in the world!”

For Bailey, football is about much more than Friday nights. It pushes athletes outside their comfort zones, builds confidence and teaches them a lot about themselves.

One lesson he hopes his players carry with them?

“Shortcuts give cheap results.”

He wants his players to take pride in discipline and hard work — but also understand that they don’t have to be so hard on themselves.

Adversity is going to be part of life. The problem in front of you doesn’t define you. How you handle the pressure and overcome it does.

🧡🖤 WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN ESKYMO?
For Bailey, there’s really only one answer:

“Greatest school in the world.”

This is home. It’s where he grew up. His entire family went here, and now his own kids will grow up here too.

Being an Eskymo means taking pride in where you’re from, representing it the right way, and never giving up — no matter how difficult things get.

It also means knowing there is a community behind you.

Bailey says Escanaba has always been a place where people look out for one another and show up when others are in need.

And that support doesn't go unnoticed.

🏈 MORE THAN FRIDAY NIGHT
What fans don’t always see is everything that happens before the lights come on.

The football program is built in the offseason, in the weight room, in the locker room and during the countless hours the players put in when nobody is watching.

Bailey says his players come to work every day hungry to improve — not just as football players, but as people.

And this year’s team?

Young. Hungry. Flying around. Getting better every day.

The goal is simple: build from yesterday and keep moving forward.

👨‍👩‍👧 HOME TEAM
When Bailey isn’t coaching, you’ll likely find him spending time with his wife, Jillian, and their five-month-old daughter, Lucy — along with their two dogs, Barry and Rita.

He also enjoys golfing with his brothers...

And, apparently, he’s already getting ready for baseball season. ⚾😂

Some things never change.

Coach Lamb, thank you for continuing to give back to the community that raised you — and for investing your time, energy and experience into the next generation of Eskymos.

🏈 JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL SCHEDULE UPDATE

There have been a few changes to the Junior High Football schedule for next week.

We realize this is short notice, and unfortunately, sometimes schedule changes are simply out of our control. The best thing we can do is roll with it, adjust as needed, and keep moving forward.

We appreciate everyone’s flexibility and understanding as we work through the changes. At the end of the day, we’re hoping for the best possible outcome and experience for our athletes.
