Soltice meditation, December 20 through 22 was great. We had a good crowd each night. The Academy is closed for the holidays through January 2. All classes resume Tuesday, January 3.
There was a good group for meditation last night. There will be another round tonight and tomorrow night. As the year transitions it's a good time to cultivate stillness. All are welcome to participate.
SOLTICE MEDITATION: December 20 - 22, each evening from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Two rounds of meditation each evening. This will take the place of regular classes for these nights.
A additional children's class will begin soon on Wednesdays
Shane, Karen and Sonya were the stars on Saturday, as Delta Team Four rolled into Bethel to help our neighbors down south who got hammered by Irene. After 4 hours of shoveling, raking, picking up boulders and drilling and filling, local folks Chuck and Jan had their basement, backyard and stairs put back together a little better. Unbelievable landscape changes and infrastructure challenges. Heavy construction vehicles and earthmoving equipment still running 24/7 it seems. Volunteer if you can, they need it!
Recovery from Irene is neighbors helping neighbors, locally and from across the state, by word of mouth, spontaneously, wherever the need is. If you think everyone's safely back in their warm and dry homes, they are not--the cleanup is just getting started. Please join us this weekend as we travel to another community to help out. We will be leaving from the Vermont Kung Fu Academy in Essex Junction 7:30am Saturday. Let's keep the effort strong!
Many thanks to Vermont Kung Fu Academy members Diana Vachon, Jake Davis and Jake's partner Juliet for their awesome help and perseverance helping out yesterday. Their volunteer effort embodies the spirit of ren yi jiao dao: "...perfect virtue, free from selfishness...the inner love for man which prompts just deeds,...righteousness, right conduct, or duty to one's neighbor..." (excerpted from our website) PLUS Jake drives a mean RAV4!
Here is a possibility for next Saturday, posted on vtresponse.com
"As we all know, Rochester was hit hard by Irene. They will be looking for help in the coming weeks, but have requested to have this weekend to collect themselves and assess damages without the intrusion of well-meaning volunteers. When they are ready to accept aid, they will be looking for groups of 10 to 15 volunteers to aid in cleanup efforts."
The other way people can help is by donating to the food box on our lobby. We will be taking the contents of that box (and all the rest of the donations outside the box that overflow into the lobby) out to whatever community we volunteer for on September 10th.
We are planning a VKFA volunteer day for Saturday September 10th. I will check vtresponse.com this week to see where our team will be able to help most effectively. If you are a student, teacher or family member connected to the Academy please consider spending next Saturday helping your fellow Vermonters who have been hit hard by the flood. Sign in here!
