New for 2022!
The very first Team Balance Baltimore “Outstanding Athlete” recognition goes to Damon Dukes.

Damon has been competing for Grapple Academy and Baltimore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for years, securing the top spot on the podium more times than we can count. This last weekend, Damon stood at the top once again securing a gold medal for Team Balance at the IBJJF Washington DC open in the Purple Belt division!

Thank you for your efforts and dedication!

This recognition is sponsored by Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group
Lending Peace of Mind
This was a BIG weekend for Team Balance Baltimore as we competed in two different events on the same day. Both the PBJFF and the IBJJF.

Both the Youth Team and Adult Team held their ground with many teammates on the podium, and a bunch of first place finishes. This has been the toughest competition to date, and one that we welcomed with open arms. Tough competition like yesterday helps build character and motivates the team for constant improvement!

We are climbing the mountain to the top!

We'd like to thank the parents of the youth team for the efforts and consistency in bring the kids to class, and competition training. We'd also like to thank all of the adult teammates who did not compete, but pushed us to be our best on the mats. You are with us while we are competing! And thanks to all of the coaches, and supporters who tagged along!

Lastly, we would like to thank our sponsorship team who help provide us with some nice swag, and cover competition costs. Please take a minute to visit their social media accounts and give them a like or follow:

I want to take this time to congratulate Mio on earning his brown belt. Mio has been with me since the beginning in 2013 when I openedthe bjj school in Rothenburg ODT, Germany. He has trained hard and has been teaching classes as well. Mio has competed in multiple tournaments.

Mio trains to continue to improve and is a good bjj instructor. He kept the school running while I returned to the US, in 2017, for a year and a half, before I returned to Germany, again, in 2019.

He is a great asset to the bjj community.
I know this is a bit late, but I'll be coming in today and I'd love to see you all! Come on out and strangle me while I'm in town.

Hey crew, my apologies for not getting in to roll with you. I had limited transportation. Also, due to work, I have to leave a week early. I am leaving today.

So, I will not get a chance to roll this time around. I will be back in the spring/summer around May for two weeks and I will, for sure, roll then.

See you on the mats.
To my Baltimore bjj family:

I apologize, in advance, for the long message.

I know this is a few days late. However, I want to say what an honor it is and has been to represent and be connected to Baltimore bjj and the great group of people over the years.

It is an honor and a privilege to have been promoted to black belt. There is a continuing responsibility to be a positive representative for Baltimore bjj, Team Balance, Phil Migliarese , Lee Synkowski , the Gracie legacy, those who have assisted me over the years and myself.

There have been so many people in the past twelve years at Baltimore bjj who have helped mold me as a bjj practitioner, yet more importantly as a person. Please do not feel left out if I do not mention you as you all are very important.

I like to say thank you to Lee Synkowski, Brian Scott (Shealy), Shimon Kafka , Jeff Mount , Josh Weinstock, Monroe Hall, Tim Kiser , Jason Newing, Zach Bruno, Savon Tham, Austin Jones, Neal Williams, Chris (Brown Belt, I apologize I forgot your last name, doesn't reflect upon you or diminish your contributions to my growth and development), Ryan Schraudner, Ryan Stark, Jeff Palughi, Rick Slomba, Nick Bohli, Dragons Mma Martial Arts and last but not least Robert J Sullivan.

Again, I apologize if I have overlooked anyone. Each of these individuals have influenced my Bjj and me as a person.

I want also thank my Bjj Rothenburg family. I opened a Bjj school in Rothenburg ODT (Germany) in September of 2013. These individuals allowed me to offer my knowledge, skills, experience and abilities. They were willing to trust me and believed in me to help them develop their Bjj skills. Words cannot express the honor it has been and the gratitude that I have for the opportunity.

My journey has just begun and I look forward to many more epic rolls with each and everyone of you. "Iron sharpens iron".

Thank you all.

See you on the mats.

Think Outside The Box.

Two locals that wrestled here in Maryland, both are now wrestling in college, are trying something different this off season.

We put word out that any former or current wrestlers (who are enrolled in college) can train for free this summer. A few have taken us up on the offer.

Wrestling and BJJ share so many commonalities. If you watched one sport but grew up doing the other you'll probably say HEY THAT'S FROM ____(sport you favor). The reality is that it is all grappling. The more you open up your mind, the more the lines blur and the more creative you can become.

Don't be afraid to suck. Sucking is the first step to success. Just show up and work.

06/03/2023

On June 25th, we’re hosting our first ever Women’s Only scrimmage. We welcome all white and blue belt women of the DMV to sign up and compete. The event will be round robin style and the goal is to give new competitors opportunities for comp experience and to bring the women’s BJJ community together to show newer women why this sport is so great!

We started our Women’s Only class in January and it’s been amazing to see the new faces in the gym, working hard and learning new skills. Women’s jiu jitsu is growing fast and one of the best parts of BJJ is the community, so we hope to see all area gyms represented for a great event! If you’d like to sign up, DM us for the link.

Please share this post to help spread the word ❤️

Two Team Titles and a Purple Debut

Over the weekend Team Balance Baltimore claimed two titles at Newbreed while Tim Dunn claimed his first gold medal as a purple belt a few hours away.

Great work by our youth athletes. The combined effort of Baltimore BJJ and Grapple Academy sealed up a dominant team win for both the Youth title and the Overall Team division.

A lot of our younger athletes made their competitive debut and walked away with gold. It was a great thing to see the hard work pay off.

Our kids were not the only ones digging deep though. Dan Goddard went to the limit with a local black belt competitor. They pushed each other over two divisions to split who got to stand at the top of the podium. It was nearly 30 minutes of combined time battling it out. The effort they displayed with impressive to say the least.

Up north Tim Dunn would make his purple belt debut. He walked away from the Good Fight sub only tournament with his first gold medal (at purple).

Team Balance Baltimore regularly cross trains together and operates as one unit. Whether you are in the Perry Hall area or closer to Essex we have a strong working relationship that is better and better everyday.

05/07/2023

Congratulations to Josh Laubach. Now real life begins. You are a college graduate!

05/05/2023

Congratulations are in order for Chris Quirk who won Brasileros (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championship) at Masters 2 Blue Belt over this past week. He accomplished this goal in both his weight division and the absolute division.

This tops off a successful run for 2023 winning both the European and Pans championships at IBJJF leading up to now.

Great work Chris. That purple belt is coming.

Attn: College Kids!

Here is a not quite known fact about Baltimore BJJ.
Both Towson University and Johns Hopkins University have BJJ Mat Clubs and both are affiliated under us.

This means when they don't have a club practice they come train at Baltimore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We encourage it! And it's free!

So here is a new idea I have been formulating.

If you wrestle for any college or are currently enrolled in college with wrestling experience and are between the ages of 18-22...You can also come train for free at Baltimore BJJ. Even if you have never done BJJ a day in your life.

Stipulations of this offer:

You must show up as a clean slate. What you already know is a bonus but you need to be coachable.

You must be willing to learn a new approach to grappling. (That doesn't mean you can't wrestle. It means you just need to be willing to try something new)

You must be respectful, humble and most importantly leave your ego at the door.

Contact us now to find out all the details.

New Purple Belts!

The average hobbiest quits BJJ at blue belt. That's just how it seems to go. The story usually goes that you join, put in a few years, the injuries add up and like Keyser Soze... P**f.

We are proud to see these four faces still standing here nearly every day of the week.

Congratulations to Chris Auer, Tim Dunn, Perryn Publico and Nicole Dunn.

The four of you are integral parts of Baltimore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Team Balance. Through the ups and downs you have stuck it out. You have seen 2 or maybe even 3 head instructors come and go. You have trusted the current leadership through thick and thin and for that we are forever grateful.

We would like to acknowledge one of these members specifically as their story is unique. Perryn started with us in middle school. He would also wrestle for Coach Sullivan through his high school years. Currently he helps instruct at Towson U's BJJ club and still manages to find time at BBJJ. This is a rare feat amongst most younger BJJ athletes who aren't interested in the professional aspects of the sport. He is in his 8th year of training.

Congratulations everyone.

Starting at 8pm BGE is doing some maintenance work in front of the building tonight. A sign is up telling us they will tow. I would advise everyone coming for 7pm to try to avoid parking in front of the building. Use the backside of the pharmacy lot. Or for the small cars just use the pharmacy lot.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Edit: this starts on Monday.

Official statement...

The gym is fine physically. We will be closed tonight. Mostly out of caution for the situation.

Thank you Baltimore County and city firefighters for doing what you do!

The business next door has apartments above it. One of the tenants had an accident that caused a fire. It was quickly taken care of.

We just need time to clean, let the smoke clear the air in the building and do a basic wipe down of everything.

All classes on Thursday will proceed as usual.

Busy mats for our older kids class last night. This program is growing fast!

It's great to see these young people putting in the work to build their skills and confidence week after week.

With consistency comes reward and some hard earned stripes were given out last night. Most notably, Lucas Rawlings received the 4th stripe on his orange belt, that green belt is on the horizon! Lucas has been training with us and sharing the mats with his father (head 9-14 kids instructor) Steve Rawlings, since he was 6 years old.

Lucas is a great role model and mentor for our younger members and we couldn't be more proud to see him advancing through his BJJ journey!
