Who could have guessed Trek Bicycle predatory practices against dealers that built their brand would blow up in their face catastrophically?

Too bad they went after dealers and shut them out rather than doubling down on supporting them. They are overstocked because they lied to independent dealers while favoring large shops so when the “boom” ended later with big dealers, Trek was left to hold the bag.

Trek instead bet on online sales cutting out the network of advocates at shops across the country built over 50 yrs.

For a year and a half, Trek’s internal daily sales performance dashboards have been “all red” – down year on year every day as the tail of the bicycle industry bust proves much longer than the boom that preceded it. Then, on Monday, January 12th, those dashboards turned green; but any celebration or sense that there is light at the end of the tunnel was put on hold. Staff had already been asked to work from home on Tuesday and Wednesday of that week, with a significant round of layoffs on the way.

We lost a good one today. Jeff valiantly fought against cancer for the past couple years with his loving wife Tammy at his side. He wasn’t local but he’d always journey to us to ride his MTB and check on Linda and I at the shop. His cool, calm demeanor was always a welcome site at the Shed. When he couldn’t make it by, he’d shoot me a message support when I needed it.

I’m excited for Jeff to be in heaven, back at full strength and ready to shred the trails again. Do me a favor and take him on your next ride with you. Whether you had the chance to meet him or not, think of his love for the trail and send a prayer up to him.

RIP Jeff Smith a beloved veteran and mountain biker.
