The Memorial Family is struggling to find the words to express the grief we feel over the loss of Sam Schulz.

Sam was a Tiger in every sense of the word. He was faithful, passionate, caring, strong, and inspiring. He was an alumnus, a SuperFan, a friend, and a beloved member of the Memorial Family. Sam filled our halls, our athletic events, and our community with a spirit that was uniquely his, and we are all better for having known and loved him.

Sam embodied what it means to be a Tiger.

Through his unwavering faith, courage, strength, joy, and love for others, Sam lived out our Memorial core values. He trusted in God’s Providence. He served others simply through the way he lived. He showed integrity and self-discipline through challenges few could understand. He approached life with incredible zeal. And perhaps most of all, Sam showed us the true meaning of family.

Sam loved Memorial, and Memorial loved Sam right back.

His impact on our students, faculty, staff, alumni, coaches, athletes, classmates, and friends cannot be measured. His strength inspired us. His passion energized us. His friendship changed us. The example he set will continue to educate hearts and minds for generations of Tigers to come.

Our hearts are heavy, but our faith reminds us that this is not goodbye. We find comfort in the hope that Sam is home with God, watching over the Memorial Family he loved so deeply.

Today and every day, we carry Sam with us. In our halls. In our hearts. In the countless lives he touched. In every place where Tigers gather.

We extend our deepest prayers and sympathies to the Schulz family, Sam’s friends and classmates, his teachers and coaches, and every member of the Memorial community who loved him.

Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.

Rest in peace, Sam. You will always be part of Memorial.

Reitz Memorial High School is proud to announce William Hays as the new head coach of the Memorial Boys Tennis program.

An Evansville native and graduate of Reitz High School, Hays brings an impressive background as both a player and student-athlete. During his time at Reitz, he helped lead the 2019 boys tennis team to the IHSAA Team State Finals while completing an undefeated individual season.

Hays continued his athletic and academic career at Eastern Illinois University, where he competed for three seasons on the NCAA Division I men's tennis team. He was named co-captain during his junior year and earned key individual victories against opponents from Lipscomb University, the University of Southern Indiana, Marquette University and the University of Illinois Chicago.

Beyond the tennis court, Hays earned his bachelor's degree in History with teacher licensure. He was recognized with an Ohio Valley Conference Academic Medal of Honor during his sophomore year for academic excellence.

Hays was also actively involved in campus life at Eastern Illinois. He served for one year on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity, where he received the Brad and Trina Myerscough Outstanding Sigma Pi Scholarship for academic achievement.

Hays graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2026 Magna Cum Laude.

“We are excited to welcome William Hays to Memorial,” said Athletic Director Chad Dockery. “William brings an outstanding combination of playing experience, academic achievement, leadership and a genuine passion for the game of tennis. His experience competing at the high school and NCAA Division I levels, along with his commitment to education and leadership, will be tremendous assets to our student-athletes and our program.”

Please join us in welcoming William Hays to the Memorial family as the next head coach of Memorial Boys Tennis.
