Ghanaian soccer coach brings holistic mentoring approach to Everett ๐ŸŽฅ โšฝ

..

George Kawa closely observes his players as they maneuver through a passing drill on a mid-November evening at Phil Johnson Ballfields in Everett.

Itโ€™s a chilly night but a typical day of practice for the Washington Rush Soccer Club U-10 Azul boys team. The players dressed for the weather and showed up to training, prepared to learn from a knowledgeable and experienced individual.

Last year, Kawa coached both the U-8 Nero and U-10 Azul boys teams, and this year he transitioned to the helm of the U-10 Cinza and U12 Azul squads. However, when it comes to the young age groups overall, Kawaโ€™s objective is to integrate a coaching philosophy where his players are learning the concepts of hard work and team collaboration but also having fun and enjoying the process, due to the fact that those age groups are in the most critical stages of development.

โ€œIn life, everybody has a different philosophy or a different idea of how they want to play soccer,โ€ Kawa said. โ€œMy dream is to coach and develop players holistically. ... Grassroots, I believe, is the golden age of learning whereby at that age group, you impart them with the basic principles of soccer before they grow up. ... I chose Washington Rush because of their vision of developing talent holistically, not only about soccer but also generally how the player develops into the community.โ€

Kawa was born in Ho, a town in southeastern Ghana, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ located in western Africa. There, he began his soccer journey before moving to Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, to play professionally and eventually pursue various coaching roles, one of them being a soccer foundation called "George Quality Soccer," which helps the next generation of players achieve their soccer endeavors.

Earlier this year, the Snohomish County Sports Commission talked with Washington Rush Soccer Club coach George Kawa about his soccer background and passion for mentoring young players. โšฝ

However, we wanted to wait to post this project until after we launched our Cleats, Cultures & Celebrations campaign and during the week that the FIFA World Cup 2026โ„ข kicked off. ๐ŸŸ๏ธ

Not only is this feature a great local story, but Kawa's home country, Ghana, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ is also competing in this year's World Cup, marking the nation's fourth appearance in the tournament's history. Ghanaโ€™s first World Cup appearance was in 2006, and the Black Star nation qualified again in 2010 and 2022.

Ghana will compete in Group L, joining the table with England, Croatia and Panama, so in addition to coaching his youth teams, Kawa will get the opportunity to cheer for his country in the worldโ€™s largest soccer tournament.

Stay tuned later today for another post detailing more about Kawa's soccer background, using photos from his practice in November and courtesy photos of him from his playing days. ๐Ÿ‘€

"Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!" ๐Ÿคพโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿคพโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿคพ

Coach Patches O'Houlihan coined that 5 D's of Dodgeball phrase more than 20 years ago in the movie, "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," but the words still held true at the 2026 Everett Slam Dodgeball tournament, hosted by nonprofit organization Dodgeball Seattle, inside the Walt Price Student Fitness Center at Everett Community College on Sunday, May 24.

There were 20 teams (eight players per team) that participated, tallying an overall attendance of 200 including spectators, all traveling from Euguene and Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Tacoma, Washington and Surrey, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ

The tournament format included five round-robin matches of 24 minutes before progressing to the single-elimination knockout bracket.

Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) events provide boys and girls an opportunity to showcase their baseball and softball skills, with the opportunity of earning a chance to attend and compete for a championship during the 2026 MLB World Series!

Approved local events give youth organizations an opportunity to provide a free and high-quality experience for their participants. Even more, by hosting, they expand their programs, while building a strong relationship with MLB, MiLB and its partners.

The Pitch, Hit & Run program is a free event series for boys and girls, and consists of a series of movements that are important in baseball and softball. Participants will compete in either 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, or 13-14 age division, with the age cut-off set on Nov. 15, 2026. They will be tested, and their measurements will be recorded for points. Based on their scores, they will advance from a local event to a team championship and then to the finals hosted at the World Series.

Dozens of gaming computers, computer mice and wireless headsets lined the tables of the upstairs and downstairs floors inside the old REI store at the Alderwood Mall in Lynnwood on May 16. ๐ŸŽฎ

It was no ordinary competition because the 2026 Washington State Scholastic Esports Association (WSSEA) spring season already concluded. Instead, the Saturday was filled with the best teams from across the state, battling for the sole title of WSSEA high school champion. ๐Ÿ†

This yearโ€™s Main Event, which included both high school and middle school tournaments, featured more than 30 teams with over 250 students participating in Splatoon 3, Overwatch and Smash Bros. Ultimate games. There were also other activities for students, including SIM racing, interacting with game developers and industry experts at the Career Fair Expo and connecting with college esports coaches to learn about their programs.

Below are descriptions of each game.

๐ŸŽฎ Splatoon 3 โ€” Take on your opponents in this ink-based, third-person shooter. You will play a best-of-five match, playing all five different game types.

๐ŸŽฎ Overwatch โ€” In this classic Hero Shooter by Blizzard, take your team of five and dominate the objective. Use your unique heroโ€™s abilities in this best-of-three matchup.

๐ŸŽฎ Super Smash Bros. Ultimate โ€” Smash is in the name, and itโ€™s in the game. Each player from each team will square up against their opponent in a one-on-one matchup. The team who wins three out of five matches reigns supreme.
