With the time and resources I currently have, I’m doing my best to serve these athletes, my family, and the vision I have for the future. My long-term goal is to open my own gym here in Fairbanks, where I can devote myself full time to training as many hockey players and athletes as possible. While that dream isn’t yet a reality, it’s something I continue to work toward every day.

Thank you! 🏒💪🏼

Dear Hockey Families,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share an update on what I’ve been working on over the past few years.

As some of you may know, I am currently a full-time Strength & Conditioning Coach for the U.S. Army at Fort Wainwright. I’ve been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) for nearly four years now, and I’m deeply passionate about helping athletes reach their full potential.

Outside of my full-time role, I run my own business, Justin Woods Hockey. About three years ago, I was able to officially launch my own strength and conditioning program. Last summer marked a turning point for the program, as I was fortunate to work with a dedicated group of hockey players and truly begin shaping the program into what it is today.

Over the past couple of summers, I’ve been renting space at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. However, the facility is only available for a few hours each week and only for about three months during the summer. As a result, it’s not currently a year-round option. Space and equipment limitations also mean I can only train a limited number of athletes at a time. Because of that, I’ve prioritized working with the same group of athletes who trained with me last summer, as they have shown tremendous commitment and trust in the program.

The structure of the program consists of three days of weight training and one day of conditioning each week. We typically start the summer with conditioning at the track and transition to on-ice conditioning about halfway through the season. These on-ice sessions are strictly for conditioning purposes and are not focused on skill development.

Strength and conditioning is my passion. I never had access to a strength and conditioning coach growing up, so my mission is to contribute to your athlete’s success in a way I wish had been available to me. Justin Woods Hockey is always open to feedback on how I can better serve the hockey community, and I welcome your thoughts and input.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Although my summer program is currently full, I’m always happy to work with families to develop individualized training plans tailored to their athlete’s needs.

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding.

Warm regards,
Justin Woods

Kids Must Strength Train - A Call to Action

Resistance training (strength training) is the act of using resistance through available joint motion, with gravity or equipment, to elicit favorable physiological adaptations such as one’s ability to exert force.

Benefits of Strength Training for Kids:
Not only physical adaptations such as strength, coordination, balance, speed, etc. Also cognitive and psychological adaptations (mental toughness, higher self-efficacy) which leads to better self esteem and self perception! Also, better sleep quality and duration!

Earlier Resistance Training -> Longer + Healthier Life:
Conditions like sarcopenia and osteoporosis can both be slowed down and even reversed the earlier we introduce strength training into our lives.

Injury reduction:
Kids should (for the most part) be able to run, jump, and play without pain or injuries. Being strong and coordinated comes with proper exercise.

Lead by Example:
It’s up to parents, coaches, guardians to set an example for kids. Teach and SHOW them how to exercise. There are so many benefits of consistent exercise.

When to Start:
As soon as the child is mature enough to listen to and execute exercise technique commands they can start training! All training should be done in the right way with proper technique. If they cannot perform proper technique due to age and maturity, they are not ready.

What to Start With:
Start training with body weight exercise. Progress them into balance, banded, and weighted exercises.

Stronger Kids -> Stronger Adults!

“Through qualified professionals, there is an opportunity to completely reshape health into the next generation. Strong kids grow up to be strong adults, not only physiologically, but mentally as well.”
