The Boston Marathon countdown is officially on for my client and friend .chiodo. Maureen has been my longest and most consistent client since opening the door of CT Pilates and Physical Therapy almost one year ago. She shows up ready to work and has been training diligently both for life and her first crack at Boston. She is a pleasure to work with and I can’t wait to see what she can do! All the best next week Maureen! Get after it!

Sending huge congratulations to Pilates client Amanda Morgan on her run at the Boston Marathon this Monday. Amanda ran a lifetime personal best of 3 hours 10 minutes and change (that’s fast!). Amanda has been attending weekly sessions for the past several weeks leading up to the marathon.

In her own words:
“Thanks so much for helping me get to the starting line healthy, letting me put in 55 mile weeks, 20 mile runs, and speed sessions without letting a cranky leg derail me. This is the first time I’ve actually enjoyed anything strength-related, or the late phase of the marathon for that matter! Perfect blend of challenging strength, flexibility, mobility, and keeping things new and interesting. “

Pilates can enhance running performance in many ways- increasing mobility, core strength, balanced muscle development, balance and the list goes on… Pilates also includes mind body principles such as concentration, centering and precision which compliment running beyond the physical aspects of the sport.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists the record for longest duration of a front plank, resting on elbows, as 8 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds, set by veteran Marine officer George Hood on February 20, 2020 😲

Now that I have your attention, let's talk planks. I consider the plank one of my favorite exercises and a go to to strengthen the whole body.
The plank strengthens the abdominals, back and shoulders. In addition it strengthens the muscles of the legs and arms and hip area. Let's list a few: erector spinae, re**us abdominis, transverse abdominis, obliques, trapezius, rhomboids, rotator cuff, deltoids, pectorals, serratus anterior, gluteus maximus, quadriceps and gastrocnemius. See where I'm going with this??

In Pilates there are many creative ways to perform and progress the plank. We can use the mat, reformer, tower and chair for a multitude of variations. Interested? Contact us now 😀
