The Baby Dragon Academy is dedicated to the traditional art of self-defense known as Jidokwan. We train hard with traditional disciplines and expectations.

Our emphasis is on practical self-defense, and not the Olympic-sport style so prominent today.

Beginner's sparring session. This was a no contact drill. He's going to have to work on his defense, however. I might have to touch him up a little.

SIGNS OF YOUR CHILD BEING BULLIED

'There are many warning signs that may indicate that someone is affected by bullying—either being bullied or bullying others. Recognizing the warning signs is an important first step in taking action against bullying. Not all children who are bullied or are bullying others ask for help,' according to Stopbullying.gov.

'It is important to talk with children who show signs of being bullied or bullying others. These warning signs can also point to other issues or problems, such as depression or substance abuse. Talking to the child can help identify the root of the problem'.

Look for changes in the child. However, be aware that not all children who are bullied exhibit warning signs. Some signs that may point to a bullying problem are:

Unexplainable injuries
Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry
Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness
Changes in eating habits, like suddenly skipping meals or binge eating. Kids may come home from school hungry because they did not eat lunch.
Difficulty sleeping or frequent nightmares
Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school
Sudden loss of friends or avoidance of social situations
Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem
Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about su***de
If you know someone in serious distress or danger, don’t ignore the problem. Get help right away.

The Baby Dragon Academy will be posting10 signs that your child is being bullied. Number 1 is listed below.
1. Unexplained Injuries
Current U.S. research indicates that roughly 1 child is bullied every 7 minutes. Often and sadly, victims of bullying behavior will attempt to hide any trace. However, physical indications can still exist in addition to behavioral changes (i.e., social withdrawal, depression, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts). Look for bruises, cuts, or scratches that can’t be a result of regular teen activities (i.e., team sports). For instance, black eyes are not often a result of normal childhood or teen roughhousing.

In fact, research from several American studies, indicate that one-tenth of bullied students admit being shoved, forcefully handled, spit on, tripped or pushed down by another student. This physical abuse does leave more than the normal teen bumps and bruises.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BULLIED?
Do you remember what that felt like? The Pain? The Fear? The humiliation? 'Bullying can affect everyone—those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who witness bullying. Bullying is linked to many negative outcomes including impacts on mental health, substance use, and su***de', according to www.stopbulling.gov. 'Kids who are bullied can experience negative physical, social, emotional, academic, and mental health issues'.

Kids who are bullied are more likely to experience:
* Depression and anxiety
* Increased feelings of sadness and loneliness
* changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in
activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into
adulthood.
* Health complaints
* Decreased academic achievement—GPA and standardized test
scores—and school participation.
* They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school.
* A very small number of bullied children might retaliate through
extremely violent measures. In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in
the 1990s, the shooters had a history of being bullied.

Also, bullying is not limited to children. Men, women and young adults also experience being bullied.

At The Baby Dragon Academy, we take bullying seriously. We specialize in imparting the skills and confidence needed to stand up to bullies, and is a proud member of "Martial Artist Against Bullying" (www.donewithbullying.com).

The Baby Dragon Academy will be posting a number of articles to help parents identify signs of bullying on our page, along with helpful tips and suggestions to assist those who are victims of bullying.

NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE IN FEAR!
