I just got a call on my only day off from a woman who did not identify herself, complaining in a voicemail about two kids riding e-bikes dangerously and telling me what I should do—as if I don’t already educate riders, encourage safe and legal riding, and do everything I can to promote responsible e-bike use.
Let me ask a simple question: Why am I getting calls from people complaining about kids riding e-bikes recklessly, as if I’m personally responsible for their behavior?
Do people call Tesla, Ford, or Chevy dealerships every time they see someone driving recklessly? Do they call hot rod shops or motorcycle dealerships demanding that they track down irresponsible drivers and have a talk with them? NO!
I sell bikes, provide service, educate riders, and encourage safe, legal riding. I’m not the parent of every kid who rides an e-bike, nor am I the police. Parents are responsible for their children, and law enforcement is responsible for enforcing the law.
Here’s the real issue: Hold the people responsible for their behavior accountable instead of blaming an entire industry or a local business.
I’ve spoken up about e-bike safety, encouraged education, and tried to be part of the solution. But I cannot control every rider in town, any more than a car dealership can control every driver on the road.
If you want safer streets, support rider education, responsible parenting, and consistent law enforcement. Don’t expect a local business to do everyone else’s job.
My door is open to constructive conversations about safety, but I will not accept responsibility for someone else’s reckless behavior simply because they bought an e-bike from a shop like mine, Amazon, Temu, or a private party.
