Our 74yr old rookie powerlifter, this is part of Phil's exercise story.

When he started a few years ago he wasn't really into working out at all but he knew it would help improve some issues he was having. Last fall we started experimenting with some powerlifting techniques to help alleviate hip pain and increase back strength, it turned out he loved it!

"Never in my life did I think I would actually enjoy going to the gym, but this is really fun."

He got new shoes so he'd have a better platform on his squats and new sweatpants that wouldn't catch on the deadlift. We're still trying to convince him to get a barbed wire tattoo.

It took a couple of months before we worked up to doing barbell work but once he got the point where he could confidently do the lifts with good form his progression skyrocketed. Not only that his hips pain is largely gone, and he has dramatic improvement in his neck's range of motion.

Here are some of his highlights

1/24/22 First squat max - 100 lbs.
2/14/22 New squat max - 115lbs.
2/28/22 First deadlift max - 175lbs.
4/14/22 New deadlift max - 185bs.

We were fortunate to capture a few moments of joy after the big lifts and we're really excited to see how he progresses.

5 Way Exercise Can Help With Pain Reduction:

🩸 Increases Blood Flow

Every part of our bodies require a healthy blood flow to continue functioning properly, even our joints. Exercise is a great way to boost blood flow & encourage better circulation. When someone with weak or pained joints exercises, the synovial membrane receives more of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to thrive.

πŸ’ͺ Builds Muscle Around the Joints

Exercise strengthens the muscles that surround our joints, as well as the neighboring ligaments and tendons. When all of these components are strong, they can cushion & support our joints more effectively to reduce joint pain.

πŸ’§ Lubricates and Nourishes the Joints

Joint pain is reduced during & after exercise because physical activity boosts the circulation of synovial fluid, which is used to lubricate joints. Exercise also moves water molecules that put weight on the joints and cause pain. In this way, exercise helps to bring oxygen and nutrients to the joints without blockages.

🀸🏼Exercise Improves Range of Motion

Exercise is a great way to improve & range of motion in our joints. When our joints are regularly exposed to movement, they stay more limber and active. This way, when daily activities require strain on joints, they are more flexible and can handle the excess pressure.

πŸ—‘ Removes Cellular Waste

Another important benefit of exercise is that it removes cellular waste through a natural biological process. Damaged cells in the joints that are no longer helping the body can be eliminated with regular exercise and reduce pain over time.

Happy ❗️

The quads are part of the superficial front line β€” a continuous line of connective tissue, or fascia, running up the front of the body from the jaw to the toes.

Modern lifestyles and repetitive sports like cycling and running tend to reduce the mobility in this fascial plane.

Try these at home or talk to a trainer about helping you get started!
