Gymnasts & cheerleaders across the state are coming together to learn about nutrition and how to properly take care of their body! Parents will join us for portions throughout the weekend so you can learn, too! Motor City Cheer is incredibly excited to welcome Betsy McNally Laouar, nationally recognized sports nutritionist, coach, and author of You Can’t Flip on Empty: Fueling the Fifth Event of Gymnastics, to our gym for a special event open to athletes and families from all over Michigan!
In a sport culture where athletes are often taught to push harder, eat less, ignore exhaustion, and “just be tough,” Betsy’s work is changing the conversation. You Can’t Flip on Empty focuses on what she calls the “fifth event” of gymnastics (and cheer!): nutrition, recovery, sleep, mental training, and the way we support athletes outside of practice. Her work emphasizes that under-fueling, burnout, poor recovery, and unhealthy relationships with food don’t just impact performance, they impact kids’ lives!
This event is NOT just for MCC athletes. School cheerleaders, all star athletes, gymnasts, coaches, and parents are all welcome, and you do not need to be affiliated with Motor City Cheer to participate.
Parents will actively participate in portions of the event because this information matters just as much for the adults supporting athletes as it does for the athletes themselves. If we want stronger, healthier, more confident kids in sports, we have to create environments where they are properly fueled, educated, and supported.
Opportunities to learn from someone like Betsy do not come around often, and we do not take this one for granted. If you care about your athlete’s health, longevity, confidence, relationship with food, and overall well-being, this is a conversation worth showing up for’
Registration is now open. We would love to see athletes and families from all over Michigan join us.

Season 13 starts….. NOW! Missed tryouts? We’ve still got room for you—email [email protected] for information about how YOU can be part of the greatness!
Season 13 already feels a little different in the best possible way. It has reminded us that the heart of a gym is not found in the loudest moments, but in the people who continue choosing each other, over and over again. The athletes who keep walking through these doors with open hearts and big dreams. The parents who sit through long practices and trust us to help raise confident, resilient kids. The coaches who pour so much of themselves into this work because they believe deeply in what this community can be.
Over the years, Motor City Cheer has grown far beyond a place to train. It has become a place where people are known, where friendships are built slowly over countless practices, road trips, competitions, and ordinary weeknights together. There is something deeply special about watching athletes grow up here, not just as cheerleaders, but as people.
To every family returning for another season: THANK YOU for being part of the story we are still writing together! Your loyalty, kindness, and belief in this program matter more than we could ever fully express. And to every new athlete and family joining us this year, we are so excited to welcome you into it!!! We hope this season gives you not only skills and memories, but a true sense of belonging.
Thirteen seasons in and we are still learning, still growing, and still finding new reasons to love this sport and this community. What a gift that is. 🤍
