Maggie took her first steps as a soon to be HALTER BROKE coming two year old! This is a huge improvement to the mare we roped in the field last weekend 😂 day two with CR Horse Training and she’s already showing us how smart she is. There’s nothin like a foundation bred buckskin filly to make your frosty mornings exciting!

Angel has been a little goose-y and forward with this cold weather (understandably so), so yesterday we slowed it down and worked on moving off leg pressure without jumping forward, relaxing during the ride, and breaking at the poll. She is doing amazing! This was day 15 with CR Horse Training (yesterday), and I can’t wait to see where we are at by day 30!

We’ve added Maggie, an untouched almost two year old, to the mix. She will be halter broke (sorry, no video footage of me and Eliza Hatman getting the halter on her for the first time, but let’s just say we could easily become ropers 😂) and started on all ground work for the next few months! I’m behind on pics and videos of Angel because of the holiday (Maria Rubio), so I’ll be posting the backlog periodically over the next week or so!

When I say I’m, “going to lunge” a horse, I don’t mean running them in circles and letting them wheel to the outside to change directions. I want them soft, responsive, and listening.

It is so important to communicate with your horse. When they can move off body language, stay focused on you, and actively watch and listen, they will be 1000 times more likely to respond positively once you back them for the first time.

This is my favorite part of training. There is nothing wrong with cowboying a little bit, but giving your horse the opportunity to succeed should always be the goal. Angel is making this easy! Stay tuned for her “first ride” video coming soon!

Dentist day yesterday. It is so important to give horses the opportunity to do well from the start.
The first thirty days are the most important days of their lives & set the trajectory of their riding career.

I always appreciate owners who cover their bases when it comes to letting me start their colts! Maria Rubio
