One of the biggest misconceptions in the movement world is that stability is achieved by finding the "correct" alignment and holding certain muscles on throughout a movement.
You'll often hear cues like brace your core, engage before you move, or keep everything switched on.
The assumption is that stability comes from maintaining the same level of muscular tension from start to finish.
But that's not how the human body works.
In reality, stability comes from constant muscular adjustment.
Your nervous system is continuously increasing and decreasing muscle activity to respond to gravity, changes in position and movement demands.
Even when you're standing completely still, your body is never truly still.
There is always a subtle postural sway, with muscles constantly adapting to keep you balanced.
Stability isn't the absence of movement.
It's movement that is continuously regulated.
When we think of stability as rigid bracing or fixed muscle activation, we often make movement harder than it needs to be.
We can create unnecessary stiffness, increase effort, and reduce the body's ability to adapt to changing demands.
Instead of teaching people to hold tension, perhaps we should help them learn how to adjust tension.
Because true stability isn't about holding muscles still.
It's about giving the nervous system the freedom to make thousands of tiny adjustments every second.
That's what keeps us balanced.
That's what allows us to move efficiently.
That's what stability really is.
Movement is medicine
