NCWRC Fishing Education Team Free fishing skills education classes to recruit new anglers and increase fishing participation.

Part of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Wildlife Education Division, the Fishing and Aquatic Education Team is responsible for developing and instructing high-quality education programs that serve to increase recreational fishing participation by the advancement of angling skills and knowledge. Classes are developed to address to meet the interest and needs of a variety of audiences of all ages. Classes available include; Family Fishing Workshops, Summer Camps, Introductory Fishing for Adults, Bass Fishing, Kayak Fishing, Catfishing, Fly-fishing, Fly-tying, Rod building, Tackle Crafting, and Boating Safety. Classes are led by a staff of fishing enthusiasts committed to increasing fishing activity and opportunities by creating an environment of social support for our constituents. In addition to our staff's personal knowledge and experience, their qualifications include the Wulff Fly-fishing School's Instructor Course, BSA Certified Angling Instructor, BSA Merit Badge Counselor, and Fly Fishers International Fly Tyer's Group. An extension of our staff includes a cadre of dedicated volunteer instructors who bring their own unique sets of experiences that play an instrumental role in the delivery of programming. Classes are free of charge at the Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville, NC.

It was a great day to host the Veterans Affairs, the Hope Recovery Center for an Introductory Fishing for Adults workshop 🫡🇺🇸🎣.

We were extremely thrilled to have them here at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center, especially with their exuberant demeanors, they really made the classroom come alive 🤩!

The veterans and staff learned a new hobby, that will most likely become their favorite one, and we couldn’t be more excited to see them again for another class 🥳.

Huge thanks to volunteer fishing instructors Mike and Robert for their assistance in helping these veterans and staff become proficient anglers 👏!

They flipped, they pitched, and they learned all about the ways to fish bass jigs to get a bite! Participants of the Bass Jig Basics learned many new skills to improve their bass game last night, including casting with baitcaster reels. These anglers made so much improvement in just a single evening, we're so proud of them! Keep up the good work, and you're sure to land some big ones in the future!

Ready to take your fly-casting skills from doing it to teaching it?
Join us October 31 & November 1 for the Fly-Casting Instructor Academy at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center.
This two-day, hands-on training is designed to help participants become more confident and effective fly-casting instructors. The Academy focuses on developing the ability to demonstrate, observe, diagnose, coach, and help others succeed using the Wulff teaching method. Fly-Casting Instructor Academy
Who is this for?
This training is a great fit for NC Wildlife volunteers, community partners, NGO leaders, current fly-fishing instructors, experienced fly anglers interested in teaching, and instructor candidates who want to help others learn beginning and intermediate fly-casting skills. Fly-Casting Instructor Academy
Over the two days, we’ll work on roll casting, the basic cast, false casting, accuracy, changing planes and direction, shooting line, recognizing common casting faults, and hands-on teaching techniques.
You don’t have to be the best caster in the room. You should come ready to learn, practice, teach, and help others enjoy fly fishing.

Bluegill and catfish and bream, oh my! 🐟🐟🐟The intrepid participants of the Cub Scout Fishing Adventure workshop braved the threat of thunderstorms, and came away with some awesome memories. There were some truly epic catches today, including a few first catches ever. Thanks to all the families and packs that came out. Catch ya next time!

From crafting lures to catching fish—it was a great day with Operation North State at the Pechmann Fishing Education Center! 🎣

Anglers started early this morning learning the fundamentals of largemouth bass behavior before crafting their own soft plastic lures. Next, they learned how to rig those lures and present them to fish.

Later, we headed to the pond to put those skills to work. Most participants caught fish on lures they had made just hours earlier! There’s something especially rewarding about catching a fish on something you created yourself.

Today’s standout color? Electric blue, which accounted for the most fish caught. 🔵

One of the best moments from last week’s Fly-Tying Forum didn’t end when the class was over.

Fisher and his brother Hudson joined us for the evening, and Fisher left especially excited about the Stealth Bomber. By early the next morning, he was already back at the vise trying to recreate it—and judging by the photo, he did a pretty impressive job.

This is exactly why programs like the Fly-Tying Forum matter. Teaching a pattern is great, but seeing that lesson spark enough curiosity that a young angler goes home and keeps tying on his own is even better.

We’re looking forward to seeing the bass Fisher catches on his Stealth Bombers next.

Keep tying, keep fishing, and keep that enthusiasm going!
