Having a variety of exercise progressions or regressions can be a game changer to help keep making progress and keep things feeling fresh within your plan.
Here are the four backward Lunge variations that I use for myself and clients.
1) Backward stepping: standard default version.
2) Backward sliding: more challenging on your balance and forces more of a pulling action with the planted leg.
3) Front Foot Elevated. Increased range of motion, which can lead to better development of glute and quads. As well as building resiliency and mobility in the knee and hip.
4) Skater Squats: bot technically a lunge, but the movement pattern is so similar that I clump it with backward lunges. Great for balance and lateral knee stability. You can adjust your range of motion as your capacity improves.
