The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is urging people to give eastern massasauga rattlesnakes plenty of space after a recent snake bite and reports of people damaging habitat while searching for the threatened species.

The DNR said people have been leaving established trails, trampling wetlands and, in some cases, threatening to kill the snakes following a July 21 bite at Proud Lake Recreation Area in Oakland County.
