The most important action a student can take is to stay calm. This will allow you to be able to focus, and follow the plan put together by your school. By staying calm, you help your fellow students stay calm which helps the teacher keep all of their students out of harm’s way, as best they can.
Listen to your teachers. They are responsible for keeping you and your peers safe. They have been trained in the school's procedures and will know what to do.
Know your egresses. Where ever you may be when a situation occurs, know at least two escape routes. If you are exiting the building, know your meeting point and check in. Authorities need to know you are safe.
In the unfortunate situation you are confronted by a shooter, run. Create as much space and movement between you and the shooter. Shooting accuracy decreases the further away you are and the more you keep moving.
Speak up. If you know a student is bringing a weapon to school or making threats, tell a school official immediately. The student reporting a weapon in this situation may have prevented another tragedy.
Lastly, at both clubs, the instructors teach being nice and respectful to everyone. This simple action could save your life if a disturbed shooter remembers you were kind to them. During the Columbine school shootings, several students were spared because the shooters “liked” them.
Most importantly though, as martial artists, all students (children and adults) are taught to treat everyone with respect and to defend those who are being picked on, beaten, or victimized. These skills are not just for our own self-defense, but for those who can’t defend themselves. The circumstances of this particular situation are unknown; perhaps this child was being bullied or harassed to the point of wanting to commit extreme violence. This is something we may never know. However the take away lesson here is the same for students of the martial arts and for everyone else. Don't be just stand by or be silent when you see someone being victimized. Your actions may end up preventing a bigger tragedy.

We wanted to officially welcome back to class STLTKD black belts Mr. Schlote (green shirt, he was in the middle of dusting off his uniform) and Mr. Housewright (far left)! They are excellent martial artists and and we are excited they were able to join us to continue their training. As we always say martial arts should be a lifelong commitment, even if you have to take a few months (or a decade) off! We also wanted to give a shout out to Mr. Krupey (middle), he’s been training with us consistently for 20+ years!

YES, we have class tonight! We hope everyone joins us so we can...

Share with your family and friends! We invite them to join in on the fun and try out a free class!
