When he stepped into a pit, he brought passion with him. You could feel it, and so could everyone else. It spread through the group, making people care a little more, laugh a little harder, and get a little more excited about the birds working overhead. That's why people love hunting with Duncan Abram.
Over nine seasons he helped put on hunts I'll never forget. Veterans in the pit. First responders who were there on 9/11. Children of fallen service members. People shooting their first goose, and people shooting their last one. Last hunts with grandpa and strangers who climbed into a pit together in the dark and came out friends.
And a whole lot of other unforgettable hunts with awesome folks from all over the country.
Behind the scenes, it didn't always feel like an episode of Little House on the Prairie. We're a close-knit group and guiding is hard. There were disagreements, long days, frustration, and mistakes. We pushed each other to do better.
Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."
We were never perfect, but we always did our best. We wanted everyone to leave thinking their hunt mattered, because it mattered to us.
Watching a few of our core guys move on over the last couple of years, Duncan included, has been a real reminder that nothing lasts forever. It's made me want to slow down and enjoy the moment a little more.
Duncan's impact on this place won't be forgotten. And knowing the Duncman, he'll be making memories wherever life takes him next.
