"I started lifting weights because I had poor self-esteem and body image. My body changed. I got stronger. I lost fat. I was better at sports and more generally useful.

But what made a huge difference was how I grew throughout the process mentally.

I gained mental resilience. I learned how to push through difficult times even when I didn't know if I could do it. I kept structure and lived focusing a large portion my life on my health, my diet, and my sleep.

And now I get to bring all those changes to other people and see them change too - physically and mentally. It's been my life's work."

Just because you get stronger doing something doesn't mean it's efficient strength training - it might just be the novice effect

Getting up off the ground was hard.
Playing with her grandson was hard.
Her knees hurt from arthritis.

She wanted to make a change, so Kelli started with us just a week ago. She needed to get stronger, have stronger bones, and be able to actually enjoy quality time with her kids and grandkids.

In one week, she's already noticed 1) she sleeps better and 2) she has more energy and feels better during the day.

And that's just the beginning. It's going to get even better over the next few months.

The deadlift will start more bent over than you intuitively want. This is on purpose, because it creates better mechanics (vertical bar path, correct involvement of the hip, knee, and back muscles) and makes you stronger than if you try to deadlift more upright.

Interestingly, most people try to deadlift upright because they think it will be less likely to hurt their back, but in fact, the opposite is true. This is because, in an upright deadlift, the bar will travel forward of your midfoot, increasing the stress on your back significantly.

Want to learn how to deadlift right? Sign up for a 30 minute session where we will get you deadlifting correctly in 5 minutes: https://signup.startingstrengthgyms.com/indy-free-30min

People don't actually care about losing weight.

They care about losing fat, looking better, and feeling better.

The weight on the scale doesn't always need to go down for you to achieve these goals.

And when you get stronger, for a lot of people, the number on the scale doesn't go down.

But that's okay.

One of our members, Doris, loves to sing in her band and play with her grandkids. She kept throwing out her back, and now, in her 60s, she's started training for strength.

She's been with us a year and hasn't thrown her back out once since starting. She's able to live her normal life undisrupted by the annoyances and pains of getting older.

Think you're too old to start? Send us a message and we can schedule you for a 30 min free session where we'll show you that you can do this!

Anthony met us at Fisher Spark in July. He was interested in getting stronger, but with his elbow ulnar nerve problem, thought he'd never be able to get stronger or be able to bench press again (an exercise he really likes).

After six weeks at Starting Strength, we've worked him through a bench press progression, and now he bench presses totally normally and with no pain.

AND all of his other lifts have gone up and he's gotten stronger.

If you've wanted to get stronger, but are worried an injury or limitation might prevent you, send us a message telling us what's going on, and we'll see if it's something can work around and help you get strong!
