About me post! Just realized I haven't posted anything like this so here are a few pictures from my very short college baseball career. I ended up having Tommy John Surgery and a bone tumor that ended my baseball career but I've been coaching ever since!

I was a corner infielder and pitched occasionally. I love working with infielders as I was a big slow guy who took a lot of pride defensively because of me bring slow! I'm very big on infielders attacking the baseball and moving there feet. Go make a PLAY. I always hit 3rd or 4th in the lineup including my brief college career. I had a line drive oriented swing. Hit a lot of doubles was never a home run hitter because that wasn't my game. Had a very high contact rate and rarely struck out. Very much a spray hitter because dead pull hitters don't just aren't going to make it ar the next level.

I've been coaching for five years and love to work one on one with athletes or in a group setting. I have worked with kids as young as 8 years old all the way up to college athletes. Would love to start working with athletes up here in Flagstaff!

Who's bad at posting on social media? Me! Today's topic is the mess that is youth baseball. Parents why are you paying coaches that don't have the best interest in your kid? This past summer I coached a 12U team and almost every team we played was throwing curveballs or some form of a breaking ball. One team in specific had a 10 year old throw about 90 pitches and half of them were curveballs. Parents, that ain't it. Winning at the youth level isn't as important as DEVELOPMENT and KEEPING YOUR PLAYERS ARMS ATTACHED.

Pitchers don't need to be throwing breaking balls until high school. Focus on fastball changeup combo and if you run into a youth coach who is allowing their players or wants their players to throw breaking balls. Steer clear! I had Tommy John at 19 year old and rehabbed for 16 months. So let me ask you parents, do you want to sacrifice your 10 year Olds arm to win a USSSA silver bracket game? I hope the answer is no.

Let's talk about where you are at in the lineup. PLAYERS, take a look at this lineup card and notice where Andre Either is hitting. He is hitting 8th. Most of you who don't know who that is probably assume is the worst hitter in the lineup. WRONG. Go look at his career stats and then take a look at this lineup. Every player is in that spot in the lineup for a reason. Maybe a player is slumping so they move you down to the 7 spot. Is it because your coach doesn't think you can hit? No. He is trying to get you more fastballs so you can gain some confidence and get your MOJO back. It doesn't matter where you bat in the lineup because you are IN the lineup. How many guys on the bench would love that spot? Also, if you don't like where you are hitting talk to your coach and see what you can do better. Don't assume he doesn't like you or doesn't think you are good. Talk to the coach go grind and get better.

PARENTS, don't go to the coach and ask why he isn't hitting 3rd and playing shortstop every game. Don't try to be the coach be a parent and watch and support your son or daughter. It doesn't matter where your kid is at in the lineup. It is simple in coaches eyes. Coaches put kids in the lineup for several reasons. One big thing that I see at the youth level is your kid who is hitting 8th is RAKING and then he gets moved up to 2nd and he forgets how to hit. This game is mental parents your kid is COMFORTABLE in the 8 spot then don't get mad if he isn't hitting 3rd.

The message here is you are in the lineup and that is all that matters.

Late night post! Let's talk glove buying/selection. This is my 2014 David Wright Wilson A2K. This was my gamer and it is still in perfect condition to this day! I just picked up a Matt Chapman Wilson A2K and you can't go wrong with an A2K. A2K will run you $350+ so what are the other options?

The answer to that is there are endless options. A $400 bat can't fix a $1 swing just like a $350 dollar glove can't fix a $1 infielder/outfielder. First off, do your research. These A2K will last as long as you want them to BUT they are expensive. I didn't have a "name brand" glove until my freshman year of high school. I used a Nike keystone, Kelly, SSK and Akadema growing up. Other than the Nike they were all great gloves. I always tell the kids I coach to treat your gloves like they are your own kids because they are your tools. Go to a store and try them on get a feel for what you like. has a great selection if you are in the Phoenix area!

Middle infielders traditionally use a bit of a smaller glove 11.25-11.75 and your corner infielders will use 11.5-12. I used a 12 my whole career because I was comfortable with it. Make sure you are comfortable and confident with it and GO MAKE A PLAY!

Recruiting week part 3! Let's talk more about recruiting specifics. I can't stress enough how important it is to choose the school that has your best opportunities ACADEMICALLY and ATHLETICALLY. Look at the mess that is the transfer portal right now. All of these athletes are transferring out for various reasons but how many do you think made their decision based off of what someone around them told them to do? Choose the school based off of what you think is the best. Is it good to have people helping you through this process? ABSOLUTELY. Ultimately though, you are the person that will be going to that school so it has to be YOU who makes the decision. Some coaches will tell you everything you want to hear then first practice it's a completely different situation. Why? They are doing whatever they can to get you on campus. I'm not saying it is right that they will pump you up and tell you you're the best or highest priority and it's not the case on day one of practice. It's just part of the process and not every coach will do that but some will.

My biggest piece of advice to in the recruiting process is this: don't go where you want to go, go where you are wanted. Does this fit everybody? No. I give you that advice because of a recruiting visit I went on when I was a junior in high school. I had been talking to a division 2 school for several months and they were a great academic school and great on the field. I was very excited about the visit. I got there the campus is beautiful, awesome facilities I knew one of the players on the team that loved it, I was leaning towards this school. I met with the coach and the first thing he said to me was this. "Which kid are you again?". As a 17 year old growing up in a town where nobody gets recruited, it absolutely crushed me. Go where you are wanted!!!!

Recruiting week part 2! Yesterday's post touched on a few levels of college baseball but today we are going to touch on all levels of college baseball.

JUCO: Junior college baseball is some of the best baseball you will come across for one big reason: everyone is playing to get out of it. Meaning everyone is trying to move on and go to a 4 year school. Junior college baseball is a grind. Ask any former Junior college player and they will say just that. Junior colleges can offer up to 24 scholarships.

NAIA: These schools are 4 year schools and are similar to D3 schools except NAIA can offer athletic scholarships. These schools are often very good academic schools and are usually a little more expensive than most schools. NAIA has players drafted every year and are a great option out of high school and for juco kids looking for the next step. NAIA schools can offer 12 scholarships.

D3: Division 3 schools get more hate by parents and athletes more than any other division in my experience. Why? I have no idea. D3 is good baseball and also has players drafted every year. D3 schools cannot offer athletic scholarships but they can offer a lot of academic scholarships to make up for the cost. Also a great option for high school and juco players.

D2: Division 2 schools are put on a pedestal compared to D3 schools. The only difference between D2 and D3 is the athletic scholarships. D2 schools can give out 9 scholarships.

D1: I don't need to go in depth here because everyone knows this level other than D1 schools can offer 11.7 scholarships.

So what are your takeaways here? Mine are look how few scholarships there are to give out. How hard is it to get a scholarship?

Recruiting week! It's getting to the end of the high school baseball season which means seniors are going to be going off to college. Also, some who are wanting to play in college are going to just be going to be students because of no offers. The pictures above show some harsh stats. The fact of the matter is not everyone can go play in college so what are you doing to separate yourself from the pack so you can go get a scholarship or walk-on somewhere? Are you getting in extra reps on the field and in the weight room? Are you trying to contact coaches to get your name out there? Or are you just telling everyone how good you are and you're getting all of these offers?

Make a recruiting video! Send it to coaches in an email and introduce yourself. Being proactive and different from other players is appealing to coaches. It's not always about having your club ball coach contact a college for you. Do it yourself and put yourself out there!

Also, D1 baseball is not the end all be all. You need to find what the best situation is for you as a player and as a student. One day baseball won't be there for you so make sure it is the right fit academically. You could be debating between a D1 school who is offering you a preferred walk-on spot on the team who doesn't have the best academics or your major. Or you could go to a D2 or NAIA school who are offering you scholarship money and are great academic schools. Which one would you choose and why?

Love this graphic from probaseballinsider.com! For Friday fielders let's talk infield positioning. This graphic shows standard depth, double play depth, halfway and no doubles. This graphic shows great positioning of our infielders based on those four situations. Is that the only way to play these four? NOPE. Some of this is going to be based on your skillset, what kind of hitter is at the plate, tendencies of your coach, arm strength, the score of the game etc. I was a third basemen and I played even with the bag for 95% of hitters. Is every third basemen going to do that? NOPE. Find what works for you and your players to put them in the best position to make a play!

The bat buying process can be intimidating! Bats now can get up to $500 (yes you read that right). Here's the truth: THE BAT DOESNT MAKE YOU A BETTER HITTER. You do not need a $500 dollar bat to get a scholarship. Find something that feels comfortable in your hands! Do your research! You can find value in a $200 bat that will perform just like that $500 bat that everyone wants. Read reviews, watch YouTube videos do a phenomenal job of explaining bats and every detail you could possibly want to know about them! The most crucial part of the bat buying process is putting the bat in your hitters hands and taking some dry swings with it. GET A FEEL FOR YOUR BAT BEFORE YOU BUY IT!

I hear questions all the time about bats so just know that a lot of hitting is being comfortable in the box and being comfortable with your bat! It doesn't have to break the bank!!!!!
