50 Years of Catches 🎣 | 1988

Sara Welchert showing off a 10.5 lb. catch — and according to the archives, waterdogs were the bait of choice that day!

A little fishing trivia: Despite the name, a “waterdog” isn’t a fish (or a tiny aquatic dog 😂) — it’s the larval stage of a salamander, and waterdogs have a long history of being used as live fishing bait in Arizona. They’re actually regulated separately from live baitfish in the state.

50 Years of Catches 🎣 | 1999

A little 1999 math: Together, these three hauled in 18.84 lbs. Worthy of a spot in the Lake Mary archives for sure.

A little lake trivia: Upper Lake Mary is the largest of Flagstaff’s two Lake Mary reservoirs and is known for some seriously big fish, including northern pike, walleye and channel catfish.

Cedar Dawn showing off NINE crappies from Upper Lake Mary! Now that’s a good day of fishing.

A little fish trivia: Crappie are schooling fish, so when you find one, there’s a good chance there are more nearby — clearly Cedar Dawn found the right spot that day! Arizona Game & Fish also notes that black crappie tend to be especially aggressive and fun to catch.

A little lake trivia: Kinnikinick is one of just 14 reservoirs within the Coconino National Forest, making this one a fun stop outside our usual Lake Mary memories.
