PICKOFF BASICS: LEARN IT BEFORE YOU SPEED IT UP!

Coach JC is breaking down the fundamentals of picking off a runner while avoiding the dreaded BALK!

For an athlete preparing to make the jump into 10U kid-pitch, there’s already a LOT to process ... holding runners, coming set, knowing when you can move, and understanding what you can and can’t do on the mound.

Are there more advanced pickoff moves and techniques to learn? Absolutely. But before we get fancy, we have to build a solid foundation.

And with young athletes, HOW we teach matters just as much as WHAT we teach.

Finding creative ways to explain movements, using simple and fun cues they can remember, and connecting new skills to something they already understand can make all the difference. If they can remember it, understand it, and repeat it, we’re headed in the right direction.

TIMING IS PERSONAL.

Coach Lauren is working with Ka. Castaneda and Ki. Castaneda on finding their timing and rhythm at the plate ... and one of the biggest lessons is that everyone’s timing is different.

There isn’t one universal point when every hitter should begin their load.

Your timing has to work with:
🥎 Your swing
🥎 Personal rhythm and tempo
🥎 Individual loading style and technique
🥎 The pitcher’s rate of delivery
🥎 Average pitch speed
🥎 Changes in velocity and pitch type

All of these factors influence when a hitter needs to start their move.

That’s why developing timing isn’t about teaching every athlete to move at the exact same moment. It’s about helping each hitter understand their own rhythm, recognize what the pitcher is giving them, and make the adjustments necessary to consistently be on time at contact.

Different hitters. Different rhythms. Same goal: BE ON TIME.

DON’T JUST DO IT ... UNDERSTAND IT.

Coach JC is checking retention and understanding with W. Roberts by asking him to explain the skill back in his own words.

At REZ, assessment isn’t always a test, a number, or a measurable. Sometimes the best assessment is simply asking an athlete:
“Tell me what we’re working on and why.”

The ability to teach-back a skill is huge in athlete development. When athletes can explain what they’re doing, what they’re feeling, and why it matters, it shows they’re not just following instructions ... they’re actually learning the game.

That gives our coaches an opportunity to:
⚾ Check retention from previous sessions
⚾ Identify gaps in understanding
⚾ Reinforce the why behind the movement
⚾ Build athletes who can recognize and make adjustments on their own

Our goal isn’t to create athletes who need a coach standing beside them for every rep.

We want athletes who understand their game well enough to coach themselves when it matters.

That’s development!

SEE IT. READ IT. REACT.

Coach Kelsey is working with M. Mathers and R. Farmer on something every catcher needs to develop ... seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand and learning to read the release.

Great catching isn’t just about reacting once the pitch is halfway to the plate. The more you know your pitcher, the more you understand what the ball is going to do before it gets there.

👀 See the release.
🌀 Recognize the spin.
🧠 Understand how each pitch reacts.
🥎 Anticipate whether you need to receive it, move with it, or get down and block it.

Different pitches create different spins, shapes, and reactions ... and every pitcher has their own tendencies. The better a catcher understands those details, the earlier they can anticipate the ball’s movement and put themselves in the best position to make the play.

3 STATIONS. 3 FOCUSES. ONE COMPLETE PITCHING MOTION.

Coach Karsen has E. Kirkpatrick, E. Stapp, and B. Vaughn in action with three distinct stations ... each designed to develop a different piece of an explosive, controlled pitching motion.

⚡ Lower Half Explosion: The legs start the chain. Creating force from the ground allows us to drive aggressively and transfer energy efficiently through the pitch.

💪 Core Balance & Stability: Power doesn't mean much without control. A strong, stable core helps connect the lower and upper halves while allowing pitchers to stay balanced and repeat their motion.

🥎 Upper-Half Whip & Counterbalance: A loose, efficient upper half allows us to create whip, while proper counterbalance helps control that energy and keep everything working together.

The goal isn't to develop these pieces independently forever ... it's to train them individually so they can eventually work together as one athletic, explosive, repeatable movement.

PITCHERS: RECOVERY | PART 3 OF 3

Coach Adam talks about one of the most overlooked parts of pitching... RECOVERY.

Post-game recovery isn’t just what you do immediately after you leave the mound. It’s what you do after the game, the next day, and throughout the days leading into your next outing.

The goal is to develop a consistent routine that helps your body recover from the stress of pitching while preparing it to perform again.

🔥 Recover after you throw.
🔥 Take care of your body the next day.
🔥 Build a routine between outings.
🔥 Be ready when your name is called again.

Recovery isn’t an event ... it’s a process.

The best pitchers don’t just have a pitching routine. They have a recovery routine.

PITCHERS: PREGAME ROUTINE | PART 2 OF 3

Coach JC walks us through what a solid pregame bullpen should look like to get your arm loose, your body ready, and your pitches dialed in before taking the mound.

A bullpen should be INTENTIONAL.

This isn’t just about throwing enough pitches to feel warm. This is your opportunity to get a feel for what you have that day.
Your bullpen gives both you AND your catcher an idea of:

- Which pitches are working best.
- What you’re commanding consistently.
- Which pitches may need a little more setup during the game.

You don't have to have your best stuff every time you take the mound ... but you need to know what stuff you DO have that day.

Depending on your age and level of play, an ideal pregame bullpen will typically fall somewhere around 20–40 pitches, with every pitch having a purpose.

Part 1 of 3 for Pitchers

Coach Max breaks down one of the most overlooked parts of pitching... what you do before you ever throw your first pitch.

Getting your body ready before every outing isn't just about feeling loose, it's about preparing to perform at your highest level while reducing your risk of injury.

A consistent pre-game routine helps you:
⚾ Activate the right muscles
💪 Protect your arm and body
🔥 Maximize velocity, command, and confidence when you take the bump

The work you put in before the game often determines what happens during the game.

FOOTBALL SEASON IS BACK!

In honor of the NFL kicking off its regular season tonight, Coach Max is bringing a little football into the baseball facility!

In this clip, Coach Max talks about utilizing a football to encourage a short, simple, and efficient arm path when throwing.

The shape of the football gives our athletes immediate feedback. If the arm path gets long or inefficient, it becomes a lot harder to throw that clean spiral. The goal isn't to throw like a quarterback ... it's to use a different tool to help reinforce a compact path, clean release, and efficient throwing motion.

Sometimes changing the implement helps an athlete feel what we've been trying to teach.

TEE WORK SHOULD STILL LOOK LIKE THE GAME

Coach Deegan talks about the importance of creating game-like vision even when the ball isn’t moving.

When you’re hitting off the tee, don’t get caught staring at the ball the entire time. As you load and land, keep your head and eyes up on the pitcher’s arm slot (your visual window) just like you would in a game.

Then let your eyes work back to the ball and execute the swing.

The tee gives us a controlled environment, but that doesn’t mean we stop training the things that matter when the game speeds up.
